[00:00:00] [SPEAKER_02]: In the gritty underbelly of Los Angeles, where neon lights and desperation collide, a young woman named Vanessa finds herself trapped in a terrifying game of cat and mouse in 1996's Freeway.

[00:00:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Welcome to the No More Late Fees podcast. I'm Danielle.

[00:00:30] [SPEAKER_03]: And I'm Jackie, and we're just two best friends and ex-Blockbuster employees rewatching some of the best and worst movies from the late 90s and early 2000s.

[00:00:38] [SPEAKER_03]: This week, we are talking about the 1996 black comedy crime thriller, Freeway.

[00:01:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Let's get into Freeway, Jackie.

[00:01:41] [SPEAKER_02]: What is this very interesting movie about?

[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Freeway is a gritty neo-noir crime thriller that follows Vanessa, a rebellious teenager who's brutally assaulted as she makes her way through a dangerous world of drug dealers, prostitutes, and a charismatic serial killer known only as the I-5 killer.

[00:02:02] [SPEAKER_03]: It stars Reese Witherspoon, Kiefer Sutherland, Amanda Plummer, Alana Ubach, Brittany Murphy, and Bakum Woodbine.

[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_03]: It was written and directed by Matthew Bright.

[00:02:14] [SPEAKER_03]: And you can currently watch it on Zumo Play, Tubi, Pluto, and Prime.

[00:02:19] [SPEAKER_03]: But before we start, let's get into our ratings rewind.

[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_02]: So you know the drill.

[00:02:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Before we get into the movie, we'll reveal the rating our Y2K versions of ourselves would give.

[00:02:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Then at the end, we'll see if our current cells agree with our initial rating.

[00:02:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Our scale consists of...

[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Would buy it, would buy it again.

[00:02:38] [SPEAKER_02]: The best, would play on repeat.

[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Five-day rental.

[00:02:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Would watch again.

[00:02:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Two-day rental.

[00:02:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Eh, okay, but nothing to write home about.

[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_03]: And same-day rental.

[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Shiv it.

[00:02:53] [SPEAKER_03]: It's trash.

[00:02:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Straight up trash.

[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Sharpen those two brushes, bitches.

[00:03:00] [SPEAKER_02]: All right, Jackie, what is your Y2K rating of this movie?

[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm waffling a little bit.

[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm pretty sure I owned it, but I'm not 100% on that.

[00:03:12] [SPEAKER_03]: So I'm like, do I do five-day rental?

[00:03:15] [SPEAKER_03]: But in my brain, I watched this a ton.

[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_03]: So I'm going to go would buy it, would buy it again.

[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Because I'm pretty sure I owned it.

[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_03]: And if not, then it was on repeat on HBO.

[00:03:27] [SPEAKER_03]: And I watched it every time I was on.

[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it was on HBO on repeat.

[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_02]: And when I rewatched this, I was like, ooh, this was inappropriate for young Danielle.

[00:03:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Lord.

[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_02]: I never owned it.

[00:03:41] [SPEAKER_02]: So it was a five-day rental for me.

[00:03:44] [SPEAKER_02]: But I do remember, like, a lot of the movies that just played on repeat on HBO ended up being, like, my favorite movies.

[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_02]: So I was conditioned.

[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_02]: That's why I love Teen Witch so much.

[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Because that shit was on rotation.

[00:04:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.

[00:04:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Supersonic it.

[00:04:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.

[00:04:04] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not going to sing this song.

[00:04:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Top that.

[00:04:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, you're so lucky we can't do that.

[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_02]: We can't do that movie on here.

[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_02]: If you guys want us to cover Teen Witch on, like, separately, just hit us up.

[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_02]: $50.

[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_02]: We'll do it.

[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Yep.

[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_03]: We'll do it.

[00:04:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Just head on over to ko-fi.com, ko-fi.com slash no more late fees.

[00:04:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Put in, like, the comments.

[00:04:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Teen Witch.

[00:04:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Send over 50 bucks.

[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Done.

[00:04:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Let's talk about the box office.

[00:04:41] [SPEAKER_02]: This movie had a budget of $3 million.

[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh.

[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_02]: It made $295,493.

[00:04:50] [SPEAKER_02]: So.

[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_02]: So.

[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_02]: But there's a, there's reasoning behind it.

[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_02]: So.

[00:04:55] [SPEAKER_02]: The film premiered at the 1996 Sundance Film Festival, where it competed for the Grand Jury Prize.

[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_02]: It was later screened on HBO on June 8th.

[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_02]: And due to the favorable reviews, it was given a brief theatrical release.

[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_02]: So what ended up happening, I saw a interview with Kiefer Sutherland through AOL Build, I think.

[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_02]: And he was talking about how it originally was bought by HBO.

[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_02]: It was meant to be on HBO.

[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Got it.

[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_02]: It was not meant to be, like, a theatrical release.

[00:05:28] [SPEAKER_02]: But because they played it, like we were just saying, we all watched it on HBO a bunch of times.

[00:05:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Because they played it so much in it, people were like, I love this movie.

[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_02]: They, that's why they put it out in the theaters.

[00:05:40] [SPEAKER_02]: So, hey, tip my hat off to it.

[00:05:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

[00:05:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Ready to hear what Lil Raj had to say?

[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Always.

[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Lil Raj, aka Roger Ebert, gave Freeway three and a half stars out of four.

[00:05:55] [SPEAKER_02]: And stated, like it or hate it, or both.

[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_02]: You have to admire its skill and the over-the-top virtuosity of Reese Witherspoon and Kiefer Sutherland.

[00:06:04] [SPEAKER_03]: He ain't lie.

[00:06:06] [SPEAKER_03]: He, I didn't see a lie there.

[00:06:07] [SPEAKER_03]: No, just watching this movie and I'm like, damn, Reese can act.

[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_02]: She really, you know what?

[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_02]: They did an SNL skit kind of joking about this, that she was like the inner white woman dialogue for somebody.

[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_02]: But like, nobody plays white women like Reese Witherspoon.

[00:06:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:06:28] [SPEAKER_02]: And I don't mean just like, she's the same, like every variation of white woman there is, she done played it.

[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_02]: And she plays it well.

[00:06:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:06:37] [SPEAKER_02]: And I do love that lately, like since she's been able to produce more, she's been picking some meatier movies and TV shows.

[00:06:47] [SPEAKER_02]: And she's just so versatile, you know, she doesn't, she's not one noting it for sure.

[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_02]: I love that about her.

[00:06:55] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:06:55] [SPEAKER_02]: But I, I, it just might be me.

[00:06:59] [SPEAKER_02]: She's doing great now.

[00:07:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Like, you know, she's still a wonderful actress, but nothing was like young Reese.

[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Nothing was like this role.

[00:07:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:07:08] [SPEAKER_03]: This was bananas, bunkers, crazy.

[00:07:12] [SPEAKER_03]: And she fucking nailed it.

[00:07:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:07:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_02]: In that same interview that Kiefer Sutherland was talking about, he, well, actually it was a different interview, but he said that like, she's the nicest person.

[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_02]: They're still friends, but the character she plays in Legally Blonde with like the dog and just very bubbly.

[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_02]: He said, that's who was on set with me, like that kind of personality.

[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_02]: And then as soon as they said action, she's saying the worst curse words you could possibly think of flawlessly.

[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_02]: He said it would always trip him up.

[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Like she surprised him so much how.

[00:07:50] [SPEAKER_03]: It was like quickly she could turn into a little demon.

[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:07:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh man.

[00:07:59] [SPEAKER_02]: So originally this movie was rated NC-17 and they reduced it to R.

[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_02]: They had to remove some explicit dialogue and toning down some of the violence.

[00:08:07] [SPEAKER_02]: In Australia, they had to take out like the scene where Kiefer asked if she, if her step, the anal sex line.

[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, it was too raunchy, but they, they cut it down.

[00:08:21] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it can't play on HBO with NC-17.

[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think so.

[00:08:26] [SPEAKER_03]: But before we get into the casting crew, let's hear a message from our pod pals.

[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_00]: If you like small town mystery, crazy news, and wild history, then the Florida Men on Florida Man podcast is for you.

[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Each week, Josh Mills and Wayne McCarty bring you the absolute best Florida has to offer.

[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_00]: So if you're looking for a show that's safe for the family, but funny enough to help you escape everyday life,

[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_00]: then listen to the Florida Men on Florida Man podcast.

[00:09:00] [SPEAKER_02]: All right, Jackie.

[00:09:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Cast and crew.

[00:09:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Woo woo.

[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_03]: So Reese Witherspoon used an exaggerated version of her natural Tennessee accent for her role as Vanessa Lutz.

[00:09:13] [SPEAKER_03]: I was like, okay, we're in LA, but we got this country twang going on.

[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.

[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, she does mention Texas.

[00:09:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:09:23] [SPEAKER_02]: So I'm assuming that that's where they're from in this movie.

[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:09:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Later on, I was like, okay, she's been bounced around, which makes sense for like her circumstance and the, the environment in which she's brought up.

[00:09:38] [SPEAKER_03]: But her people are where your people are at because her grandma's in Stockton.

[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh my gosh.

[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_03]: I had totally forgotten that, that part of it.

[00:09:48] [SPEAKER_03]: And I was watching it on DVD.

[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_03]: So when they flip it over and like, look at the address, I tried to pause it and like go and rewind it to see if like it was an actual place in Stockton, California, which Stockton for a while.

[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_03]: I haven't checked the stats recently, but Stockton was like the murder capital of the U S for a while.

[00:10:10] [SPEAKER_03]: And it was when my grandparents lived there.

[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Uh, I got very giddy as a nineties gal because the identical twins that were in the movie that played Brenda and Bonnie, those twins were actually played by two of the three Creel triplets, Leanna Creel.

[00:10:31] [SPEAKER_02]: And now her name's Monica Lacey, but obviously Monica Creel.

[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_03]: I just recognized her as Tori from Saved by the Bell.

[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_02]: You are correct, my dear.

[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_02]: And I also know that because you know how much I love the parent trap world universe, that they also played in one of the parent trap movies as the trip, like as triplets, all three of them.

[00:10:53] [SPEAKER_02]: So I thought that was really cool.

[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_02]: And then when I was doing the notes, I found out that identical twins, Brittany Daniel and Cynthia Daniel were offered and turned down the part.

[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_02]: I was like, they would have been in their bag.

[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Why didn't they play it?

[00:11:06] [SPEAKER_02]: But I guess maybe is a little graphic and it was an indie film.

[00:11:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:11:10] [SPEAKER_03]: So we love a cross casted movie.

[00:11:15] [SPEAKER_03]: We have Dan Hedaya and Brittany Murphy, both starred in Clueless, which was released only two weeks before production for this movie began.

[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_03]: And Reese had actually auditioned for the lead role of Cher in Clueless.

[00:11:30] [SPEAKER_03]: So little cast connection.

[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_03]: There's also another cast connection.

[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Reese and Alana.

[00:11:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Who buckled and legally blonde.

[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.

[00:11:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_03]: I was like, hold on.

[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Is that, is that the best friend from Legally Blonde?

[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_03]: And Ken's like, yep.

[00:11:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, okay.

[00:11:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Just making sure.

[00:11:55] [SPEAKER_02]: Another clueless connection with Reese is that her, one of her like first boyfriends in Hollywood was Jeremy Sisto.

[00:12:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh.

[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:12:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Interesting.

[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_02]: He said he, she was her, she was his first like actress girlfriend and they broke up from a misunderstanding.

[00:12:16] [SPEAKER_02]: She went to Africa to go film a movie and she didn't call much.

[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_02]: So he thought he, she broke up with him and he started dating someone else.

[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_02]: And when she got back, he was like, my bad.

[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_02]: I feel really bad.

[00:12:28] [SPEAKER_02]: But he ended up marrying that girl.

[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_02]: They're divorced now, but.

[00:12:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Interesting.

[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:12:33] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought that was very interesting.

[00:12:34] [SPEAKER_02]: All right.

[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Let's start it off.

[00:12:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:12:39] [SPEAKER_03]: So the first scene, we're introduced to Vanessa.

[00:12:44] [SPEAKER_03]: She lives somewhere in the rough neighborhood in LA.

[00:12:48] [SPEAKER_03]: She's, it seems like maybe in summer school or some sort of remedial class at the very least.

[00:12:55] [SPEAKER_03]: And we find out that she's pretty illiterate.

[00:12:59] [SPEAKER_03]: She, she's just learning how to read.

[00:13:01] [SPEAKER_02]: And I think like when I watched this film, when I was younger, I kind of was just like, I thought it was just crazy and wild.

[00:13:10] [SPEAKER_02]: But rewatching it now and just seeing like how so many of the adults fail this girl, because I had to keep telling myself throughout the movie that she is supposed to be 14 years old.

[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:13:23] [SPEAKER_02]: And obviously Reese wasn't 14 when she did this movie, but she was still in her teens.

[00:13:28] [SPEAKER_02]: She was still a teenager.

[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_02]: She was 20.

[00:13:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, okay.

[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_02]: She was 20.

[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.

[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:13:34] [SPEAKER_03]: I agree.

[00:13:35] [SPEAKER_02]: You had to look it up.

[00:13:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, yeah.

[00:13:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I looked up how old she was supposed to be playing and how old she was, but I agree.

[00:13:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Like just coming up from a perspective where like I used to be an educator and how like there were so many times that.

[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_03]: They just, she was just failed by everyone.

[00:13:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Non-stop.

[00:13:58] [SPEAKER_03]: And it showed in the way, like I never clocked originally watching it that like she was illiterate.

[00:14:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Like my, my teenage brain just never registered, but I'm like, how much school has she missed or like never been put in school because her mom just leaves her at the house by herself so that she can do tricks to afford her drugs.

[00:14:23] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, like just terrible.

[00:14:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:14:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:14:28] [SPEAKER_02]: And no one like takes the time to say that everyone blames her or just says, well, that's, that's what would you expect from this type of person?

[00:14:37] [SPEAKER_02]: But here's a child that literally is a product of her environment.

[00:14:41] [SPEAKER_02]: The reason that she's acting this way is not because she's some brat is because she's trying to survive.

[00:14:48] [SPEAKER_02]: And she had learned all of these skills that everyone's looking down at her.

[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_02]: And nobody has empathy for her.

[00:14:58] [SPEAKER_02]: I think the only person that really shows any kind of empathy is the one of the police officers, which is Dan.

[00:15:06] [SPEAKER_02]: What is his name?

[00:15:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Adore.

[00:15:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Detective Wallace is the only one that has the slightest amount.

[00:15:13] [SPEAKER_02]: We see her mom.

[00:15:14] [SPEAKER_02]: We see her stepdad.

[00:15:16] [SPEAKER_02]: The teacher we don't really get to see interacting.

[00:15:18] [SPEAKER_02]: You know, her boyfriend loves her.

[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, fine.

[00:15:22] [SPEAKER_02]: But he's in his own stuff.

[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_02]: And then the judge, the other cop, freaking serial killer.

[00:15:31] [SPEAKER_02]: They're all looking down on her.

[00:15:33] [SPEAKER_02]: It's just, it's quite sad.

[00:15:35] [SPEAKER_02]: I actually felt very sad after thinking like watching and thinking about it.

[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_03]: The, the part where her mom is handcuffed on the couch, like the, the stepdad is, is like high on crack or meth.

[00:15:57] [SPEAKER_03]: And is just giggling.

[00:15:58] [SPEAKER_03]: And the mom is just like apologizing to her and like love bombing her.

[00:16:02] [SPEAKER_03]: And she's having to be the one to be like, it's okay.

[00:16:05] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not mad at you, mom, blah, blah, blah.

[00:16:07] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, for a girl to have to do this.

[00:16:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[00:16:12] [SPEAKER_03]: And it seems like it's not the first time.

[00:16:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.

[00:16:16] [SPEAKER_03]: It was heartbreaking.

[00:16:18] [SPEAKER_02]: And the way that they like, now looking back, the way they position, position sexual abuse in this movie was fucking, it was wild.

[00:16:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:16:31] [SPEAKER_02]: You know, I, I think I was shocked to be watching it because they say this is a comedy.

[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_02]: And yes, some parts are very funny, but I felt so uncomfortable in some, in some parts.

[00:16:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:16:47] [SPEAKER_03]: So we also meet Vanessa's, she keeps calling him her fiance, Chopper played by Bachem Woodbine.

[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_03]: And then once, and then the next scene after the school scene, it's her mom trying to solicit Johns.

[00:17:04] [SPEAKER_03]: And I was like, is that honey bunny?

[00:17:07] [SPEAKER_03]: And Ken goes, yep.

[00:17:09] [SPEAKER_03]: He just confirmed who everyone was in this movie for me.

[00:17:13] [SPEAKER_03]: So it was Amanda Plummer who plays honey bunny in Pulp Fiction.

[00:17:18] [SPEAKER_03]: That's how I refer to her.

[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_03]: That's how you know her.

[00:17:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:17:21] [SPEAKER_02]: I just like had to take a lot of deep breaths because the N word is used quite a bit in this movie.

[00:17:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Not just the N word, just the most heinous racist shit.

[00:17:33] [SPEAKER_03]: But, and I'm just like, I, I don't remember any of this and I hate this whole scene.

[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:17:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Hard R's.

[00:17:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Hard.

[00:17:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Hard R's.

[00:17:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Horde.

[00:17:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Like when we meet her mom, she says the N word.

[00:17:48] [SPEAKER_02]: And when she says it, then Vanessa comes up.

[00:17:53] [SPEAKER_02]: So I'm thinking, oh, she might say something to her mom about it, but she don't.

[00:17:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Because she has a black boyfriend, fiance, Chopper.

[00:17:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Let me just tell you this.

[00:18:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Just because people are married to people of color does not mean they're not racist.

[00:18:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Because I hate to say, you would think, right?

[00:18:13] [SPEAKER_02]: But sometimes don't be the worst offenders.

[00:18:18] [SPEAKER_02]: And Chopper don't give a damn.

[00:18:21] [SPEAKER_02]: And that's like a whole nother subject.

[00:18:23] [SPEAKER_02]: But yeah.

[00:18:24] [SPEAKER_02]: So we meet her mom, Tricken.

[00:18:26] [SPEAKER_02]: And she calls out her mom and is like, aren't you, like, she talks about her stepdad.

[00:18:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Who, by the way, actor Michael T. Weiss, who plays her stepdad, all I could say as soon as he came up, I was like, that's the pretender.

[00:18:41] [SPEAKER_02]: So if you watch NBC, back in the day, there was a show called The Pretenders.

[00:18:49] [SPEAKER_02]: And I never put those two together.

[00:18:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Probably because when I saw this movie, The Pretender, I don't think, was on.

[00:18:56] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember.

[00:18:57] [SPEAKER_02]: But that shook me to my core.

[00:18:59] [SPEAKER_02]: That The Pretender was this nasty man.

[00:19:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:19:03] [SPEAKER_03]: So Vanessa's mom, Ramona, and her stepfather are both arrested because Ramona solicits an undercover cop.

[00:19:12] [SPEAKER_03]: And then because she has drug paraphernalia in her purse, that gives them the right to search their home.

[00:19:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Probable cause, yeah, to search the home.

[00:19:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Which is a Motel 6.

[00:19:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.

[00:19:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:19:27] [SPEAKER_03]: And while her mom is out soliciting men, Vanessa's having a fight off her fucking stepdad who's so fucking high out of his mind and, like, physically assaulting her and attempting to sexually assault her when the police break in.

[00:19:45] [SPEAKER_02]: The way it's just, like, he's on top of her when they bust in.

[00:19:52] [SPEAKER_03]: I feel like it's...

[00:19:54] [SPEAKER_03]: She knows at a certain point if she hasn't fought him off and he gets, like, his weight on her to just, like, lay there and disassociate and let what's gonna happen happen rather than fight back.

[00:20:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Which is so horrible and so terrifying to think about.

[00:20:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:20:14] [SPEAKER_03]: That she just kind of goes into this...

[00:20:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Other place.

[00:20:18] [SPEAKER_03]: This disassociative mode.

[00:20:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:20:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Because she's just, again, trying to survive.

[00:20:24] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's so fucking high that when they arrest him, he just cannot stop laughing at all.

[00:20:31] [SPEAKER_02]: And her mom is just cussing and...

[00:20:35] [SPEAKER_02]: And even the recognition of the fact that they caught the stepfather about to, like, sexually assault her, she doesn't even bat an eye about it.

[00:20:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:20:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Whatsoever.

[00:20:49] [SPEAKER_02]: So it's crazy.

[00:20:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I had a couple of notes for these beginning scenes.

[00:20:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Number one, the eyebrows on Vanessa.

[00:20:59] [SPEAKER_03]: They are distracting.

[00:21:02] [SPEAKER_03]: So 90s.

[00:21:04] [SPEAKER_03]: And jarring to look at.

[00:21:08] [SPEAKER_02]: You know, I don't think I even paid attention to them.

[00:21:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I can't stop.

[00:21:13] [SPEAKER_02]: I was like, those fucking eyebrows, man.

[00:21:15] [SPEAKER_03]: And then, oh, when the credits start playing at the very beginning, I'm like, this sounds very Danny Elfman-esque.

[00:21:26] [SPEAKER_03]: And bitch, lo and behold, it was!

[00:21:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Because he was paid a whole dollar and some yard work to do the score for this movie.

[00:21:36] [SPEAKER_02]: And it's probably because Oliver Stone produced this movie.

[00:21:42] [SPEAKER_02]: So, yeah.

[00:21:44] [SPEAKER_02]: So he produced this movie.

[00:21:45] [SPEAKER_02]: And so when they were trying to get Kiefer Sutherland to be in the movie, he was like, no, I don't want to do it.

[00:21:54] [SPEAKER_02]: And I forgot what set they were.

[00:21:55] [SPEAKER_02]: They were at the Oval Office.

[00:21:57] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if they were shooting, if Oliver Stone was shooting a presidential movie.

[00:22:02] [SPEAKER_02]: I can't.

[00:22:02] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if it was JFK or something like that.

[00:22:04] [SPEAKER_02]: And Kiefer was like, yeah, I don't want to be in this movie.

[00:22:07] [SPEAKER_02]: And so he was like, why?

[00:22:10] [SPEAKER_02]: And so he named a few things.

[00:22:11] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like, you don't have the balls to play this role anyways.

[00:22:14] [SPEAKER_02]: So he kind of goaded him into playing the role.

[00:22:18] [SPEAKER_02]: So essentially, he's like, by the time I left, I was in this goddamn movie.

[00:22:22] [SPEAKER_02]: So because he wanted to be in an Oliver Stone movie, but like an Oliver Stone, a movie that Oliver Stone like, you know, was directing, not producing.

[00:22:31] [SPEAKER_02]: But he killed this role.

[00:22:33] [SPEAKER_02]: So, yeah.

[00:22:35] [SPEAKER_03]: The scenes with him like drooling and having to wipe away his drool, like live rent free in my head, even 20 years later, 25 years later, almost 30 years later.

[00:22:49] [SPEAKER_02]: You know, and it's so funny because I forget about him in this role.

[00:22:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Because the role that I always think that puts so much hate in my heart about him is an eye for an eye.

[00:23:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:23:04] [SPEAKER_02]: With Sally Field.

[00:23:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:23:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Him in that movie.

[00:23:08] [SPEAKER_02]: And also.

[00:23:09] [SPEAKER_02]: In A Time to Kill.

[00:23:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:23:11] [SPEAKER_02]: He's a horrible human being in that one too.

[00:23:14] [SPEAKER_02]: So I always think of those and I forget.

[00:23:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, he's such a shithead in this one too.

[00:23:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Long way to say he plays a really good villain.

[00:23:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.

[00:23:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely.

[00:23:27] [SPEAKER_03]: After Ramona and the stepdad are arrested, the cops, she actually asks to go home with one of the cops.

[00:23:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, she's like, I don't want to be put back in foster care.

[00:23:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Can I go home with you?

[00:23:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, can you just take me home?

[00:23:42] [SPEAKER_03]: And the cops kind of like, trying to be nice about it.

[00:23:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, oh, they don't let us do that, blah, blah, blah.

[00:23:47] [SPEAKER_03]: She's like, if you don't want to, just say it.

[00:23:50] [SPEAKER_03]: And the cops like, yeah, I don't want to do that.

[00:23:53] [SPEAKER_02]: And she says that her caseworker comes.

[00:23:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:23:59] [SPEAKER_02]: She says it's her parole officer.

[00:24:01] [SPEAKER_03]: But it's her social worker.

[00:24:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[00:24:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:24:04] [SPEAKER_02]: But after she's been in, because she's still a child.

[00:24:08] [SPEAKER_02]: So I can kind of see why she might say parole officer.

[00:24:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:24:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Plus we find out she has been in quite a bit of trouble with the law previously.

[00:24:17] [SPEAKER_03]: So it may be a combo.

[00:24:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

[00:24:21] [SPEAKER_03]: So she does not want to go back into the system.

[00:24:24] [SPEAKER_03]: So she handcuffs the poor social worker played by Conchita Farrell.

[00:24:31] [SPEAKER_03]: She handcuffs her to the bed, like her foot to the bottom of the bed.

[00:24:37] [SPEAKER_03]: And she was nice about it, though.

[00:24:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:24:40] [SPEAKER_03]: She's like, I'm really sorry if you yell loud enough, Mr. So-and-so next door will hear you.

[00:24:46] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm putting the key on the TV.

[00:24:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Like she has a plan.

[00:24:51] [SPEAKER_02]: I love that she does not pack a bag.

[00:24:54] [SPEAKER_02]: She packs a red basket.

[00:24:56] [SPEAKER_02]: A bag.

[00:24:56] [SPEAKER_02]: So I never put it together, which now I can.

[00:25:00] [SPEAKER_02]: But when I was younger, I never put it together that this movie is a modern take on Little Red Riding Hood.

[00:25:07] [SPEAKER_02]: And so you kind of see that in the beginning of the film, there's like a cartoon of like a wolf and all this other stuff.

[00:25:15] [SPEAKER_02]: And then she's also when she's sitting on the couch, there's a cartoon of like Little Red Riding Hood.

[00:25:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Then she has the basket.

[00:25:23] [SPEAKER_02]: And then at the end, when she goes to her grandma's house and what's his face, pretend to be her grandma.

[00:25:30] [SPEAKER_02]: With the sheet up, like nose and the shower cap on.

[00:25:35] [SPEAKER_02]: And I was like, that's such an interesting, I never put two and two together, but now it makes sense.

[00:25:41] [SPEAKER_03]: So she goes to Chopper to tell him like, hey, I'm going to go hang out with my grandma.

[00:25:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Who I'm pretty sure she said has never met her.

[00:25:52] [SPEAKER_02]: She's never met her grandma.

[00:25:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Her grandma doesn't even know that she exists, most likely.

[00:25:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Her and her mom had beef because apparently her mom tried to throw acid on her face or some shit.

[00:26:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Plus, she never has met her father.

[00:26:08] [SPEAKER_02]: And like the picture that she shows him when she does meet Bob later is apparently a picture of a mass murderer named Richard Speck.

[00:26:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:26:18] [SPEAKER_02]: So I wonder if that's like something that even Bob knew.

[00:26:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:26:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh my God.

[00:26:26] [SPEAKER_03]: And every time she pulls out that wallet, man, I'm like, that Peckle wallet goes hard.

[00:26:33] [SPEAKER_03]: It is the character of Peckle from Sanrio.

[00:26:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I know because in the 90s, everyone had their favorite Sanrio character.

[00:26:42] [SPEAKER_03]: And for a long time, Peckle was mine.

[00:26:44] [SPEAKER_03]: So I was like, I see you, Vanessa.

[00:26:50] [SPEAKER_03]: So Vanessa goes to Chopper to say like, I got to peace out for a while.

[00:26:55] [SPEAKER_03]: He's like, here, take my gun and sell it for money for your trip.

[00:27:00] [SPEAKER_03]: So Chopper's supportive.

[00:27:03] [SPEAKER_03]: He's a gang member, but he's very supportive of his boo.

[00:27:07] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if he's a gang member.

[00:27:09] [SPEAKER_02]: I just know that there was a group of guys harassing him or they were having some sort of verbal altercation.

[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_02]: They leave when she rolls up with her car.

[00:27:21] [SPEAKER_02]: But the scene after this, like they make out.

[00:27:25] [SPEAKER_02]: He asked where she's going to be.

[00:27:27] [SPEAKER_02]: She says she's going to talk to him later.

[00:27:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Once she leaves, this other group of guys come back with their car and shoot him.

[00:27:34] [SPEAKER_02]: I was just the way he dies, though.

[00:27:36] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, this is so fucking extra ridiculous.

[00:27:40] [SPEAKER_03]: But I just imagine like it happens and like then someone just happens upon like a kid who's dead on the street.

[00:27:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Dead on the street.

[00:27:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, it was.

[00:27:54] [SPEAKER_03]: This whole movie made me feel things.

[00:27:59] [SPEAKER_02]: So she doesn't even know Chopper's dead, but she's on the road.

[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_02]: She's headed to Stockton.

[00:28:05] [SPEAKER_02]: And her car breaks down.

[00:28:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:28:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Ken, I played the what kind of car is that game with Ken?

[00:28:11] [SPEAKER_03]: And he's like, I think it's an AMC Rambler.

[00:28:14] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, in my head, I thought it was a Rambler.

[00:28:15] [SPEAKER_03]: He wasn't confirmed on the Rambler, but he was like, it's definitely an AMC of some kind.

[00:28:20] [SPEAKER_02]: So don't know what that is.

[00:28:23] [SPEAKER_03]: The only AMC I know is the movie theater.

[00:28:29] [SPEAKER_03]: It was a green car, Danielle.

[00:28:31] [SPEAKER_02]: That's all I needed to know.

[00:28:32] [SPEAKER_02]: So, yeah, she.

[00:28:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, sorry.

[00:28:36] [SPEAKER_02]: One tidbit we forgot about was that on the news, we see that there is a serial killer going around killing ladies of the night.

[00:28:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.

[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_03]: And so Vanessa has the hood up.

[00:28:50] [SPEAKER_03]: She's trying to like she's just touching wires like she's not doing much of anything.

[00:28:55] [SPEAKER_03]: She's just pissed.

[00:28:56] [SPEAKER_03]: And then Bob rolls up in his Ford Explorer and he's like, here, let me try and help you.

[00:29:04] [SPEAKER_03]: And then he's like, step on the gas.

[00:29:07] [SPEAKER_03]: And Ken literally goes, what's stepping on the gas going to do?

[00:29:11] [SPEAKER_03]: He didn't know.

[00:29:12] [SPEAKER_03]: He didn't know what he was going to do.

[00:29:15] [SPEAKER_03]: So not the way to diagnose a car issue.

[00:29:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.

[00:29:20] [SPEAKER_02]: But he never wanted to fix the car.

[00:29:23] [SPEAKER_03]: And Bob is sinister.

[00:29:25] [SPEAKER_02]: As street smart as she is, I was so surprised with the whole Bob thing that she wasn't more ready to like not trust him.

[00:29:35] [SPEAKER_02]: But Kiefer does such an amazing job playing this very wholesome guy that you kind of, you know that he's horrible.

[00:29:45] [SPEAKER_02]: So you're anticipating when he's going to switch.

[00:29:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:29:49] [SPEAKER_02]: But at first you're like, oh, he's, he's a nice guy.

[00:29:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:29:52] [SPEAKER_02]: He's really nice.

[00:29:53] [SPEAKER_02]: He works with the youths to like.

[00:29:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Help them with their problems.

[00:30:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:30:00] [SPEAKER_02]: So you could see how she could kind of open herself up.

[00:30:07] [SPEAKER_02]: But at the same time, the duality of her character is that she's playing essentially a long con too, because she knows she can play that.

[00:30:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Like she is a child, but because she's been in this situation, she plays up some of those characteristics a little bit.

[00:30:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:30:26] [SPEAKER_02]: I think.

[00:30:28] [SPEAKER_02]: So just watching both of these two people, these actors play this out.

[00:30:36] [SPEAKER_02]: You don't need anybody else in this movie.

[00:30:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Just these two are so dynamic.

[00:30:41] [SPEAKER_02]: It's like, I didn't look away when they were together on screen.

[00:30:45] [SPEAKER_03]: And the way she says Bob, like, because once he, he does make the flip, she realizes there's no door handle to get out of the car.

[00:30:59] [SPEAKER_03]: He has asked her about her stepfather forcing himself on her and what that felt like and things like that.

[00:31:08] [SPEAKER_03]: And she's like, why are you making me describe this in such detail?

[00:31:11] [SPEAKER_03]: He grabs her ponytail and cuts it off.

[00:31:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Let me tell you, all of these things would have made me want him to catch my hands.

[00:31:22] [SPEAKER_02]: But you cut my hair?

[00:31:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:31:24] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm cutting your dick off.

[00:31:27] [SPEAKER_03]: And his weapon of choice is a straight blade, like straight edge razor.

[00:31:33] [SPEAKER_03]: And so she pretends to do so.

[00:31:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, he wants her to like undress.

[00:31:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.

[00:31:39] [SPEAKER_03]: And so she's like, well, she has Doc Martens on.

[00:31:41] [SPEAKER_03]: She's like, well, these boots are going to take me a while to get off.

[00:31:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Hold on.

[00:31:45] [SPEAKER_03]: And she gets one of them off.

[00:31:46] [SPEAKER_03]: And I think she hits him with it.

[00:31:48] [SPEAKER_02]: She does.

[00:31:48] [SPEAKER_02]: She hits him right in the nose.

[00:31:50] [SPEAKER_02]: And then she crawls into the backseat and then pulls out her, the gun that Chopper gave her.

[00:31:55] [SPEAKER_02]: But the way that she talks to him when he pulls out the knife, like, it's almost like a negotiator.

[00:32:01] [SPEAKER_02]: She talks to him, not really.

[00:32:04] [SPEAKER_02]: She's scared, but not really.

[00:32:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Like, she's so calm in the way that she's communicating with him.

[00:32:10] [SPEAKER_02]: And then when she gets the gun, then he starts acting like, oh, he didn't mean to do it.

[00:32:16] [SPEAKER_03]: It was a misunderstanding.

[00:32:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.

[00:32:19] [SPEAKER_02]: And she tells him to pull off of the highway.

[00:32:22] [SPEAKER_02]: And they get off of the exit on a dirt road.

[00:32:26] [SPEAKER_02]: And, man, she shoots him in the head.

[00:32:29] [SPEAKER_02]: And the way that she sits so, so calmly in the back, like, it's so quiet that you could see her, like, trying to digest this.

[00:32:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Like, she's killed this man.

[00:32:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:32:40] [SPEAKER_02]: And then this motherfucker wakes up.

[00:32:42] [SPEAKER_02]: And so then I think she runs out of the car or something like that.

[00:32:47] [SPEAKER_02]: But then he comes out and she shoots him so many fucking times.

[00:32:51] [SPEAKER_02]: She, like, quadruple taps him.

[00:32:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:32:54] [SPEAKER_02]: And close range, too.

[00:32:56] [SPEAKER_02]: She shoots him in, like, the shoulder.

[00:32:58] [SPEAKER_02]: He should be dead.

[00:32:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:33:01] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know how he got to the hospital because after she does that, she doesn't really check his vitals, which if you're in a horror movie, you would know.

[00:33:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Make sure you shoot him in the head if you really want him to be dead.

[00:33:12] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, he was shot in the head.

[00:33:14] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.

[00:33:15] [SPEAKER_02]: It was on the side.

[00:33:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, she shoots him, yeah, like, in the neck.

[00:33:18] [SPEAKER_03]: And I think it, like, goes up and through his mouth.

[00:33:20] [SPEAKER_03]: So he's just, like, gurgling blood and shit.

[00:33:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, my God.

[00:33:25] [SPEAKER_02]: So she takes his money.

[00:33:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Then she goes to the nearest, like, rest station to go have breakfast.

[00:33:31] [SPEAKER_02]: She's got blood smeared all over her.

[00:33:35] [SPEAKER_02]: She doesn't even go to the bathroom.

[00:33:37] [SPEAKER_02]: She just, like, so much trauma.

[00:33:40] [SPEAKER_03]: She, like, sits down at the counter.

[00:33:44] [SPEAKER_03]: And she just, like, looks at her hands and she goes, oh, I must look afraid.

[00:33:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Where's your washroom?

[00:33:51] [SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, bitch.

[00:33:53] [SPEAKER_02]: But I don't know how long she's there because he goes, he is able to get to the hospital.

[00:34:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.

[00:34:00] [SPEAKER_02]: But he is in the hospital.

[00:34:02] [SPEAKER_02]: And the way the cops quickly find her is kind of crazy to me that, I don't know if someone

[00:34:08] [SPEAKER_02]: at the diner called if there's a girl with blood.

[00:34:10] [SPEAKER_03]: I think someone, yeah, called about it.

[00:34:14] [SPEAKER_03]: And then just going back to their conversation in the car because I did write down some key

[00:34:19] [SPEAKER_03]: phrases that made me laugh out loud.

[00:34:22] [SPEAKER_03]: I ain't no trick, baby.

[00:34:26] [SPEAKER_03]: She keeps asking, are you going to do sex to me?

[00:34:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Which is interesting language because she has disassociated the act of sex as, like, a consensual thing.

[00:34:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[00:34:43] [SPEAKER_02]: She does also ask him if he is the killer, the serial killer that everyone's looking for.

[00:34:49] [SPEAKER_02]: He doesn't really answer but kind of laughs and smiles.

[00:34:51] [SPEAKER_02]: And then she finds out that he likes to sleep with people when they're dead, too.

[00:34:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:34:58] [SPEAKER_02]: So she really calls him out on stuff.

[00:35:00] [SPEAKER_02]: But she really hits a trigger button when she talks about his mother.

[00:35:04] [SPEAKER_02]: He loses his fucking shit.

[00:35:07] [SPEAKER_03]: That serial killer M.O.

[00:35:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Don't you be talking about my mama.

[00:35:11] [SPEAKER_03]: That's always mommy issues.

[00:35:14] [SPEAKER_03]: So Vanessa is quickly arrested.

[00:35:17] [SPEAKER_03]: And she, some time has gone by because Bob shows up for the hearing and he's in, like, a halo.

[00:35:25] [SPEAKER_03]: And he's still recovering.

[00:35:27] [SPEAKER_03]: But, like, his eye is so and shut.

[00:35:30] [SPEAKER_03]: He's lost an eye and he's doing the little side drooly thing.

[00:35:34] [SPEAKER_03]: And he's in a wheelchair.

[00:35:37] [SPEAKER_03]: And Vanessa has no remorse, nor should she.

[00:35:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[00:35:42] [SPEAKER_03]: But they're trying to pin it on her as if she had just robbed him for his money.

[00:35:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[00:35:49] [SPEAKER_02]: So that comes into play of what we were talking about earlier.

[00:35:52] [SPEAKER_02]: That everyone is treating this essentially a child.

[00:35:56] [SPEAKER_02]: No one's looking at why she's been doing this stuff.

[00:35:58] [SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, you look at a, she's 14.

[00:36:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:36:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Why did he pick her up?

[00:36:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Why did the grown man pick her up and not take her to the police station right away or to the hostel or something?

[00:36:11] [SPEAKER_02]: So they're not looking at his actions.

[00:36:14] [SPEAKER_02]: And he does tell her that if she tries to turn him in and take him to the cops, that he's going to get away with it.

[00:36:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Because a guy like him versus a girl like her, never going to work.

[00:36:26] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's essentially right.

[00:36:28] [SPEAKER_02]: We do meet his wife, played by Brooke Shields.

[00:36:31] [SPEAKER_02]: She does a great job playing this role.

[00:36:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Again, one of those, during that time frame, I think Brooke Shields was trying to like change her image a little bit and not play the same kind of roles, I guess.

[00:36:46] [SPEAKER_02]: So it was cool to see her in an indie movie.

[00:36:49] [SPEAKER_03]: And she does like aloof, like trophy wife.

[00:36:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Very well.

[00:36:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:36:55] [SPEAKER_03]: It's so good.

[00:36:56] [SPEAKER_03]: And like you can see when the trial is going on, like they're portraying Vanessa as this like cold hearted, violent young girl or like girl that has no remorse.

[00:37:11] [SPEAKER_03]: And like if we let her out, essentially she'll do it again type thing.

[00:37:15] [SPEAKER_03]: And then they're interviewing Bob and his wife and they're like, thank you so much for the support.

[00:37:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Like obviously the community that they built around them is rallying behind them, sending them money, all of this stuff.

[00:37:29] [SPEAKER_03]: So it's exactly how Bob said it would turn out for Vanessa.

[00:37:34] [SPEAKER_03]: And when she's in the courtroom and sees him for the first time and she's like, oh my God, you got a poop bag?

[00:37:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Like she's just.

[00:37:45] [SPEAKER_02]: The best, the one liner that everyone I think knows if you've seen this movie is like, oh my God, somebody done hit you with an ugly stick or something like that.

[00:37:57] [SPEAKER_02]: The way that this 14 year old is taunting this grown ass man.

[00:38:01] [SPEAKER_02]: And you know, he is pissed.

[00:38:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:38:04] [SPEAKER_02]: He is pissed.

[00:38:05] [SPEAKER_02]: And no one looks into like, so when the cops interview her, they don't even, she tells them like, this is the serial killer dude.

[00:38:16] [SPEAKER_02]: And they're like trying to say, do you have proof?

[00:38:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Whatever.

[00:38:18] [SPEAKER_02]: They don't even really truly investigate her allegations.

[00:38:23] [SPEAKER_02]: They just start pulling up all of her rap sheet.

[00:38:26] [SPEAKER_02]: And one of the police officers was really like antagonistic towards her.

[00:38:31] [SPEAKER_02]: I, you know, I don't know if it's good cop, bad cop situation.

[00:38:35] [SPEAKER_02]: And then she calls him a lot of racist shit.

[00:38:38] [SPEAKER_02]: And then she fucking wails on him with her.

[00:38:43] [SPEAKER_03]: She WWF hits him with a steel chair.

[00:38:49] [SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, slurs aside, you had what was coming to you.

[00:38:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Like he was being a real dick.

[00:38:59] [SPEAKER_02]: I give her, give him that.

[00:39:02] [SPEAKER_02]: And it's funny because later on he finds out that his, her boyfriend was black.

[00:39:07] [SPEAKER_02]: And he, I forgot what name term he used for, you know, the racial, her being essentially racist above dating a black man kind of thing.

[00:39:18] [SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, he, he had the physical damage.

[00:39:23] [SPEAKER_02]: It was due because he was being horrible to her.

[00:39:26] [SPEAKER_02]: But that's when we find out that like, she's like, look, I'm gonna, she, she tells the truth.

[00:39:32] [SPEAKER_02]: She does not lie ever.

[00:39:33] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't even know if she knows how to lie.

[00:39:35] [SPEAKER_02]: She's so like brutally honest about stuff.

[00:39:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:39:38] [SPEAKER_02]: She talks about how she's done arson like two, three times.

[00:39:43] [SPEAKER_02]: How she used to steal.

[00:39:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Shoplift.

[00:39:47] [SPEAKER_02]: So it's not looking great.

[00:39:49] [SPEAKER_02]: But she knows how the system works.

[00:39:51] [SPEAKER_02]: She knows the system is not for her.

[00:39:53] [SPEAKER_02]: And that's the saddest part that she's been in and out of many of the systems and just how it's never for her.

[00:40:01] [SPEAKER_02]: So she is constantly thinking ahead of how to survive, how to get out, how to, how to move in the situation.

[00:40:07] [SPEAKER_02]: She knows when she gets to, to, to juvie that she has to be prepared.

[00:40:11] [SPEAKER_02]: And it's such a weird like aura situation or environment because the psychiatrist or the late warden, I don't know what you would call her.

[00:40:22] [SPEAKER_02]: She is like overly saccharine.

[00:40:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:40:27] [SPEAKER_02]: And it's off-putting for sure.

[00:40:30] [SPEAKER_02]: But she knows as soon as she gets in there, she gets her bunk and the person next to her is Brittany Murphy.

[00:40:36] [SPEAKER_02]: But she knows she's got a, she's, she's got a fight.

[00:40:39] [SPEAKER_02]: She got to show dominance.

[00:40:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[00:40:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Somebody's already stepping to her as soon as she gets in there, which is, I would be so scared.

[00:40:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Juvie is not for me.

[00:40:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:40:52] [SPEAKER_03]: So she sits on her bunk and Brittany Murphy, I literally sat on my phone and I was like, why does Brittany Murphy have all these scars on her in freeway?

[00:41:02] [SPEAKER_03]: There's no explanation for all the scars.

[00:41:05] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, I just, I like a backstory.

[00:41:07] [SPEAKER_03]: So, but I want to know where these came from because she has like these scars all over her face.

[00:41:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Brittany Murphy in any role is just, I was like, give her an Oscar.

[00:41:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Like the little dialogue and just, this is like a tertiary character and she eats up the screen when she is on it.

[00:41:28] [SPEAKER_03]: And saying that compared to Reese, who's doing a fucking phenomenal job, like chef's kiss.

[00:41:36] [SPEAKER_03]: It was so good.

[00:41:37] [SPEAKER_02]: I just think the reason she had the scars was because, you know, she's on drugs.

[00:41:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Maybe it represents how hard life has been because her character is still pretty nice.

[00:41:48] [SPEAKER_02]: She's not wearing orange.

[00:41:50] [SPEAKER_02]: So we learned that wearing orange means that you've murdered someone or done some violent crime.

[00:41:55] [SPEAKER_02]: Murder outfit.

[00:41:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:41:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:41:58] [SPEAKER_02]: And Alana Ubok, like in this role, she's such a top tier comedian because I know that this is a drama, but it's also like a comedy.

[00:42:10] [SPEAKER_02]: And the way that she walked, like the choice to like, like the whispering.

[00:42:17] [SPEAKER_02]: I was like, what'd you say?

[00:42:19] [SPEAKER_02]: What'd you say?

[00:42:20] [SPEAKER_02]: You want to stab me?

[00:42:21] [SPEAKER_03]: I can't hear you.

[00:42:24] [SPEAKER_03]: And we were watching it on DVD and Ken's like, I need the captions.

[00:42:27] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, I don't know how to do that on this old technology.

[00:42:32] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm sorry.

[00:42:33] [SPEAKER_03]: We're just not going to know what her character says.

[00:42:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Incoherent.

[00:42:37] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't even think she was really saying words.

[00:42:40] [SPEAKER_02]: It's just such a choice.

[00:42:42] [SPEAKER_02]: But the way that Reese's character just goes ham and beats the living daylights out of her.

[00:42:50] [SPEAKER_03]: It reminds me of the scene in Mean Girls where she's like, it's like a jungle and like the people are like jumping off the cafeteria table, like all feral and animal-like.

[00:43:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Like that is how Vanessa lunges at Mesquita.

[00:43:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.

[00:43:07] [SPEAKER_03]: And like starts just slamming her head into a pole.

[00:43:13] [SPEAKER_03]: And then the pole happens to have a payphone on it.

[00:43:17] [SPEAKER_03]: So she grabs that handle of the payphone and is just whipping her with it.

[00:43:21] [SPEAKER_03]: I was like, is this bitch dead?

[00:43:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Like what's happening?

[00:43:25] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought she for real was going to die and no one was coming to stop her.

[00:43:30] [SPEAKER_02]: And then she pulls a pencil and is trying to get it in her ear.

[00:43:35] [SPEAKER_02]: And Brittany Murphy's character is like, put it in her.

[00:43:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Put it in her.

[00:43:39] [SPEAKER_02]: It's so crazy.

[00:43:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Because the very 90s trope, Brittany Murphy's character is a lesbian.

[00:43:47] [SPEAKER_03]: So obviously things go in women.

[00:43:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Like that's how she gets off.

[00:43:54] [SPEAKER_03]: That whole scene is just fucking bananas.

[00:44:00] [SPEAKER_02]: It's crazy.

[00:44:01] [SPEAKER_02]: They put her in solitary.

[00:44:03] [SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, she seems fine with it.

[00:44:05] [SPEAKER_02]: She has some vivid dreams.

[00:44:09] [SPEAKER_02]: This is where she has the dream about her grandma that she's never met.

[00:44:12] [SPEAKER_02]: And then she gets a toothbrush.

[00:44:14] [SPEAKER_02]: She makes a shiv.

[00:44:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Somehow she has a lighter.

[00:44:18] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know how she got that through.

[00:44:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Maybe she put it up her woohoo.

[00:44:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Not sure.

[00:44:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:44:24] [SPEAKER_03]: And it was at this point where I had to pause and Google,

[00:44:28] [SPEAKER_03]: what is the difference between a shiv and a shank?

[00:44:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Because inquiring minds want to know.

[00:44:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Is a shank a longer, what is it?

[00:44:38] [SPEAKER_03]: No, it is a shiv is to cut.

[00:44:42] [SPEAKER_03]: A shank is to stab.

[00:44:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, so when she cuts like that.

[00:44:47] [SPEAKER_03]: So that is a shiv.

[00:44:49] [SPEAKER_03]: So if she had sharpened the other end into a point to stab,

[00:44:54] [SPEAKER_03]: it would have been a shiv on one end and a shank on the other.

[00:44:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Who's got time to be making language for this shit?

[00:45:01] [SPEAKER_03]: It's prison language, Danielle.

[00:45:03] Oh my God.

[00:45:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, after she gets out of solitary,

[00:45:08] [SPEAKER_02]: you see her having a bad dream.

[00:45:10] [SPEAKER_02]: And she says like, after she gets out of solitary,

[00:45:12] [SPEAKER_02]: usually she has some bad dreams.

[00:45:14] [SPEAKER_02]: And of course her BFF is like,

[00:45:17] [SPEAKER_02]: you want me to get you some, what did she say?

[00:45:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Something juice or something.

[00:45:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Pretty much trying to get her on drugs.

[00:45:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:45:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:45:24] [SPEAKER_03]: And she's like, nah.

[00:45:27] [SPEAKER_03]: But then at one point, Rhonda was like,

[00:45:30] [SPEAKER_03]: hey, you want to fuck?

[00:45:32] [SPEAKER_03]: And Vanessa is like,

[00:45:34] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll play ball a little bit and we can make out.

[00:45:37] [SPEAKER_02]: She doesn't even ask if she could fuck.

[00:45:39] [SPEAKER_02]: She just jumps on her bed.

[00:45:42] [SPEAKER_02]: And just like,

[00:45:43] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what she was doing like on her side.

[00:45:45] [SPEAKER_02]: And she's like, look,

[00:45:47] [SPEAKER_02]: I'll make out with you,

[00:45:48] [SPEAKER_02]: but we're not doing no sex shit or no fuck shit.

[00:45:51] [SPEAKER_02]: But then they get caught.

[00:45:54] [SPEAKER_02]: And plus during the whole time of like her going in and out of court,

[00:45:58] [SPEAKER_02]: her lawyers working hard as hell to try to get her to be tried as a minor.

[00:46:03] [SPEAKER_02]: And they're all trying to get her tried as an adult.

[00:46:07] [SPEAKER_02]: And so because she loses that battle,

[00:46:10] [SPEAKER_02]: essentially they're going to move her to a real prison.

[00:46:14] [SPEAKER_02]: So her, the girl, she fucked up Alana Ubak,

[00:46:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Mesquita.

[00:46:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Mesquita.

[00:46:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Again, apologies for fucking up her name.

[00:46:22] [SPEAKER_02]: So her, Mesquita,

[00:46:24] [SPEAKER_02]: the weird, crazy psychiatrist lady,

[00:46:27] [SPEAKER_02]: one of the guard,

[00:46:30] [SPEAKER_02]: and then the twins are pulling up to a gas station,

[00:46:34] [SPEAKER_02]: going to the bathroom.

[00:46:35] [SPEAKER_02]: She, as soon as the door closes,

[00:46:37] [SPEAKER_02]: which I don't know why she would let them go into the bathroom by themselves.

[00:46:42] [SPEAKER_03]: By themselves, not cuffed.

[00:46:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[00:46:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Door shut.

[00:46:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[00:46:48] [SPEAKER_02]: And these are your most dangerous bitches.

[00:46:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:46:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Not even like the ones that you control.

[00:46:53] [SPEAKER_02]: You know their behaviors.

[00:46:55] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:46:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Soon as Vanessa gets in there,

[00:46:58] [SPEAKER_02]: she pulls out her shiv and lets everybody know,

[00:47:00] [SPEAKER_02]: y'all better back up because it's about to get bloody.

[00:47:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:47:03] [SPEAKER_02]: And then Mesquita,

[00:47:05] she's like,

[00:47:06] [SPEAKER_02]: you're not going to get away.

[00:47:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Take it all by yourself so that you can do some else.

[00:47:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Two heads are better than one.

[00:47:15] [SPEAKER_03]: She's like the character from Pitch Perfect before Pitch Perfect is around.

[00:47:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Just the whisper queen.

[00:47:23] [SPEAKER_02]: She talks a little bit louder in these scenes.

[00:47:26] [SPEAKER_02]: So,

[00:47:28] [SPEAKER_02]: the lady psychiatrist,

[00:47:31] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what to call her,

[00:47:32] [SPEAKER_02]: warden,

[00:47:33] [SPEAKER_02]: she comes in and Mesquita takes care of business.

[00:47:36] [SPEAKER_02]: She really ranks her out.

[00:47:38] [SPEAKER_02]: But like,

[00:47:39] [SPEAKER_02]: she really goes far.

[00:47:40] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't like the fact that as crazy as Vanessa gets with people,

[00:47:45] [SPEAKER_02]: she had the nerve to kind of look like she was judging Mesquita for how she handled business.

[00:47:51] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm like,

[00:47:51] [SPEAKER_02]: you be doing crazy shit too.

[00:47:53] [SPEAKER_02]: And then you went and she killed the guard.

[00:47:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Killed the guard.

[00:47:58] [SPEAKER_02]: He was like,

[00:47:59] [SPEAKER_02]: you didn't have to kill me.

[00:48:00] [SPEAKER_02]: She's like,

[00:48:01] [SPEAKER_02]: fuck off,

[00:48:01] [SPEAKER_02]: you perverts.

[00:48:02] [SPEAKER_02]: She thinks everyone who works for the jail are pervs.

[00:48:05] [SPEAKER_02]: And the Bob C twins were just watching.

[00:48:08] [SPEAKER_02]: And they're like,

[00:48:09] [SPEAKER_03]: okay,

[00:48:10] [SPEAKER_03]: we'll just get in the car and we'll wait for you to steal it.

[00:48:14] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't,

[00:48:15] [SPEAKER_03]: were they in the car?

[00:48:16] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.

[00:48:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I thought they got left.

[00:48:18] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know what happened to them after this scene.

[00:48:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:48:21] [SPEAKER_03]: But then we go to like,

[00:48:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Mesquita meets up with her boyfriend,

[00:48:26] [SPEAKER_03]: played by Guillermo Diaz.

[00:48:31] [SPEAKER_03]: But like now,

[00:48:33] [SPEAKER_03]: she and Vanessa,

[00:48:34] [SPEAKER_03]: like,

[00:48:35] [SPEAKER_03]: family for life.

[00:48:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:48:38] [SPEAKER_02]: We ride together.

[00:48:39] [SPEAKER_02]: We died together.

[00:48:40] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if I could forgive you for beating the shit out of me.

[00:48:43] [SPEAKER_02]: We would have been fighting.

[00:48:44] [SPEAKER_02]: We would have had to have another fight.

[00:48:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:48:46] [SPEAKER_02]: We would have to fight one more time for us to be even.

[00:48:49] [SPEAKER_02]: There ain't no way.

[00:48:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:48:51] [SPEAKER_03]: So,

[00:48:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Mesquita gives her a car and a gun and is like,

[00:48:55] [SPEAKER_03]: you do you,

[00:48:57] [SPEAKER_03]: boo.

[00:48:57] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to go do him.

[00:48:59] [SPEAKER_02]: And like a makeover,

[00:49:01] [SPEAKER_02]: it seems.

[00:49:01] [SPEAKER_02]: So she gets the car.

[00:49:02] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what she does with the car because later we find her out in the streets trying to trick.

[00:49:07] [SPEAKER_02]: She pulls this guy,

[00:49:09] [SPEAKER_02]: has him go to the,

[00:49:10] [SPEAKER_02]: you know,

[00:49:11] [SPEAKER_02]: into an alley

[00:49:13] [SPEAKER_02]: for a blowjob or whatever.

[00:49:16] [SPEAKER_02]: And then she pulls a gun out of him and tries to rob him and finds out that he only had $5 in his fucking wallet.

[00:49:21] [SPEAKER_02]: She was like,

[00:49:22] [SPEAKER_02]: what were you going to pay me with,

[00:49:23] [SPEAKER_02]: bitch?

[00:49:24] [SPEAKER_02]: So she makes him take off his pants,

[00:49:27] [SPEAKER_02]: get into the trunk.

[00:49:28] [SPEAKER_02]: She takes the car.

[00:49:29] [SPEAKER_02]: She goes to her grandma's house.

[00:49:31] [SPEAKER_02]: While all of this is happening,

[00:49:33] [SPEAKER_02]: one of the cops says,

[00:49:34] [SPEAKER_02]: you know what?

[00:49:35] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to go back to the crime scene because something's just not right.

[00:49:37] [SPEAKER_02]: He starts to actually investigate if Crazy Pants is the serial killer.

[00:49:42] [SPEAKER_02]: And I guess they find evidence from her ponytail.

[00:49:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Like they never really tell us what exactly like lynched it for the case.

[00:49:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I would think like he does find her ponytail.

[00:49:54] [SPEAKER_03]: I would think it would be the straight edge razor because then maybe they could get DNA off of it or like in matches,

[00:50:02] [SPEAKER_03]: the murder weapon and all the other cases.

[00:50:04] [SPEAKER_03]: But they only ever show him finding the ponytail.

[00:50:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:50:08] [SPEAKER_02]: And then when they come to his house,

[00:50:11] [SPEAKER_02]: he's at rehab.

[00:50:12] [SPEAKER_02]: And so only his wife is there and they have a search warrant and they find a shed with a shit ton of just porno magazines.

[00:50:22] [SPEAKER_02]: So I'm like,

[00:50:22] [SPEAKER_02]: underage.

[00:50:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh yes.

[00:50:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Like child porn.

[00:50:25] [SPEAKER_02]: And once his wife sees that and she can't even get out the word that they're children,

[00:50:29] [SPEAKER_02]: she goes upstairs and shoots herself in the head.

[00:50:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Which.

[00:50:35] [SPEAKER_03]: And it's very graphic.

[00:50:36] [SPEAKER_03]: It is.

[00:50:37] [SPEAKER_03]: There's brains on the wall.

[00:50:39] [SPEAKER_03]: It was a lot.

[00:50:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:50:42] [SPEAKER_02]: And so he,

[00:50:45] [SPEAKER_02]: he,

[00:50:45] [SPEAKER_02]: he first character,

[00:50:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh,

[00:50:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Bob is driving home,

[00:50:48] [SPEAKER_02]: but he sees all that pop,

[00:50:49] [SPEAKER_02]: all them popo at his house.

[00:50:50] [SPEAKER_02]: And he turned quickly around,

[00:50:52] [SPEAKER_02]: go to the diner.

[00:51:22] [SPEAKER_02]: He's got that picture of me,

[00:51:23] [SPEAKER_02]: because why is she screaming out grandma?

[00:51:26] [SPEAKER_02]: You've already said that your grandma doesn't even know you exist.

[00:51:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:51:31] [SPEAKER_02]: So do you think she's going to come out and say,

[00:51:33] [SPEAKER_02]: yes,

[00:51:33] [SPEAKER_02]: here I am.

[00:51:35] [SPEAKER_02]: I know it's probably to make it more like Red Riding Hood.

[00:51:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:51:39] [SPEAKER_02]: But it just made zero sense.

[00:51:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Well,

[00:51:42] [SPEAKER_03]: and it's like,

[00:51:42] [SPEAKER_03]: you know the address.

[00:51:43] [SPEAKER_03]: There's a map of the trailers on like a board.

[00:51:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Just look and see where Meemaw lives and go.

[00:51:51] [SPEAKER_03]: And then she just walks into her house.

[00:51:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Doesn't even know.

[00:51:55] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm here.

[00:51:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Grandma,

[00:51:56] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm here.

[00:51:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Who the fuck?

[00:51:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Like,

[00:51:58] [SPEAKER_02]: even if the situation wasn't what it was,

[00:52:01] [SPEAKER_02]: I'd have been like,

[00:52:02] [SPEAKER_02]: who the fuck are you?

[00:52:03] [SPEAKER_02]: So Stockton,

[00:52:04] [SPEAKER_03]: part of the capital of the US.

[00:52:06] [SPEAKER_03]: US.

[00:52:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Most people have guns.

[00:52:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[00:52:12] [SPEAKER_02]: She's completely delusional at this point.

[00:52:14] [SPEAKER_02]: So much trauma.

[00:52:16] [SPEAKER_02]: And so then she walks up in and she sees grandma with her,

[00:52:24] [SPEAKER_02]: her blanket all the way up to her fucking eyes.

[00:52:27] [SPEAKER_02]: And I think it's a shower cap.

[00:52:29] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think it's a bonnet because it looked plastic.

[00:52:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:52:32] [SPEAKER_02]: She's like,

[00:52:32] [SPEAKER_02]: grandma,

[00:52:32] [SPEAKER_02]: what you doing under there?

[00:52:33] [SPEAKER_02]: It's me.

[00:52:34] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm here.

[00:52:36] [SPEAKER_02]: And then,

[00:52:37] [SPEAKER_02]: but I love how she doesn't even get shocked.

[00:52:40] [SPEAKER_02]: She's like,

[00:52:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Bob with your nasty ass mouth or something.

[00:52:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:52:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Like she hears his weird breathing and she's like,

[00:52:47] [SPEAKER_03]: fucking Bob again.

[00:52:50] [SPEAKER_03]: And then like,

[00:52:51] [SPEAKER_03]: what I don't understand is like,

[00:52:54] [SPEAKER_03]: grandma is strangled with a noose.

[00:52:58] [SPEAKER_03]: It looks like.

[00:52:59] [SPEAKER_03]: She's butt ass naked.

[00:53:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Like the way he violates her.

[00:53:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:53:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Is insane.

[00:53:06] [SPEAKER_02]: It's so bad.

[00:53:07] [SPEAKER_02]: So then her and Bob get to fighting again.

[00:53:11] [SPEAKER_02]: And.

[00:53:12] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm like,

[00:53:12] [SPEAKER_02]: cover his breathing hole.

[00:53:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Cover it.

[00:53:16] [SPEAKER_02]: She,

[00:53:17] [SPEAKER_02]: man,

[00:53:18] [SPEAKER_02]: feisty as fuck.

[00:53:18] [SPEAKER_02]: She gets,

[00:53:20] [SPEAKER_02]: gets Bob throw all sorts of shit.

[00:53:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Bob ain't got no chance in hell.

[00:53:25] [SPEAKER_02]: And she kill him.

[00:53:26] [SPEAKER_02]: But what I don't,

[00:53:27] [SPEAKER_02]: and Bob has a gun too.

[00:53:28] [SPEAKER_02]: He is shooting up.

[00:53:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Like,

[00:53:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:53:31] [SPEAKER_03]: There's just like,

[00:53:32] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm like,

[00:53:33] [SPEAKER_03]: we need to be counting shots because that clip should be empty soon.

[00:53:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:53:38] [SPEAKER_02]: It should be done.

[00:53:40] [SPEAKER_02]: And the cops are like outside and they're like,

[00:53:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Vanessa,

[00:53:43] [SPEAKER_02]: stop Vanessa.

[00:53:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Like,

[00:53:44] [SPEAKER_02]: so they know Vanessa.

[00:53:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Like what if Vanessa was really in danger?

[00:53:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Y'all would have let her die.

[00:53:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Like it was.

[00:53:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh no.

[00:53:51] [SPEAKER_02]: They're the worst fucking cops ever.

[00:53:54] [SPEAKER_02]: And then they go inside.

[00:53:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Well,

[00:53:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Vanessa comes outside and they go in there and they're like,

[00:54:00] [SPEAKER_02]: damn,

[00:54:00] [SPEAKER_02]: damn,

[00:54:00] [SPEAKER_02]: damn.

[00:54:03] [SPEAKER_03]: And.

[00:54:05] [SPEAKER_03]: They go.

[00:54:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Holy shit.

[00:54:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Holy shit.

[00:54:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:54:09] [SPEAKER_03]: They say,

[00:54:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Holy shit.

[00:54:10] [SPEAKER_03]: A lot.

[00:54:12] [SPEAKER_02]: And then Vanessa's like,

[00:54:13] [SPEAKER_03]: anybody got a cigarette?

[00:54:16] [SPEAKER_03]: And that's the end of the movie is that this scene behind me where she just

[00:54:20] [SPEAKER_03]: giggling.

[00:54:22] [SPEAKER_02]: She ain't never going to be right.

[00:54:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh,

[00:54:25] [SPEAKER_02]: we forgot.

[00:54:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh,

[00:54:26] [SPEAKER_02]: we forgot to say that at some point she found out that Chopper was dead.

[00:54:30] [SPEAKER_02]: And I really think that was like,

[00:54:31] [SPEAKER_02]: she done after that.

[00:54:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:54:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:54:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Zero fucks given about.

[00:54:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Anything.

[00:54:37] [SPEAKER_03]: It was after she talked to the detectives.

[00:54:40] [SPEAKER_03]: She's like,

[00:54:41] [SPEAKER_03]: I want my one phone call.

[00:54:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:54:43] [SPEAKER_03]: And she calls and Chopper's dead.

[00:54:45] [SPEAKER_03]: And so then she's like,

[00:54:48] [SPEAKER_03]: watch me.

[00:54:49] [SPEAKER_02]: And when they interview one of her friends that she used to like do stuff

[00:54:54] [SPEAKER_02]: with,

[00:54:55] [SPEAKER_02]: or,

[00:54:55] [SPEAKER_02]: you know,

[00:54:56] [SPEAKER_02]: steal and stuff like that.

[00:54:57] [SPEAKER_02]: What was that girl wearing?

[00:54:59] [SPEAKER_02]: And why does she have a cane?

[00:55:02] [SPEAKER_02]: I must've missed that part.

[00:55:04] [SPEAKER_02]: What?

[00:55:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Jackie,

[00:55:08] [SPEAKER_02]: she had,

[00:55:09] [SPEAKER_02]: she didn't just have cooter cutters.

[00:55:11] [SPEAKER_02]: She had like spandex that were cut off and you literally see her tank.

[00:55:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Like,

[00:55:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh,

[00:55:20] [SPEAKER_02]: it's very much.

[00:55:21] [SPEAKER_02]: It was a lot.

[00:55:23] [SPEAKER_02]: I wasn't expecting it.

[00:55:25] [SPEAKER_02]: And then she's what you've got to rewind to see that scene because it's like,

[00:55:28] [SPEAKER_02]: what the fuck is this?

[00:55:30] [SPEAKER_03]: She's.

[00:55:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh,

[00:55:32] [SPEAKER_03]: wild.

[00:55:32] [SPEAKER_03]: And that is freeway,

[00:55:34] [SPEAKER_03]: man.

[00:55:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Wild ride from beginning to end.

[00:55:39] [SPEAKER_03]: So it was filmed on like on location in LA from July 31st to August 28th in 1995.

[00:55:46] [SPEAKER_03]: So a little less than a month long production.

[00:55:50] [SPEAKER_03]: That's crazy.

[00:55:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:55:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Well,

[00:55:53] [SPEAKER_02]: I,

[00:55:53] [SPEAKER_02]: what I think is nuts is that on the Blu-ray commentary director,

[00:55:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Matthew Bright said that the scene where Reese Witherspoon is soliciting Johns on the

[00:56:02] [SPEAKER_02]: street.

[00:56:02] [SPEAKER_02]: She got furious at the director when she found out that one of the cars that pulls up to

[00:56:06] [SPEAKER_02]: her wasn't an actor soliciting and they just kept filming.

[00:56:10] [SPEAKER_03]: That is crazy.

[00:56:13] [SPEAKER_03]: And I missed that part.

[00:56:15] [SPEAKER_03]: And again,

[00:56:16] [SPEAKER_03]: technology not working for me because I can rewind the DVD,

[00:56:22] [SPEAKER_03]: but I will go look for her friends and then the real life John.

[00:56:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:56:29] [SPEAKER_02]: It's the second car.

[00:56:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.

[00:56:32] [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah,

[00:56:33] [SPEAKER_03]: the fake blood used in the truck stop scene produced an allergic reaction on Reese's skin.

[00:56:40] [SPEAKER_03]: I,

[00:56:41] [SPEAKER_03]: it was all over her face and her hands.

[00:56:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Like I can't even imagine.

[00:56:45] [SPEAKER_02]: It's crazy.

[00:56:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Now I remember when we worked at Blockbuster,

[00:56:50] [SPEAKER_02]: I remember the cover of the sequel,

[00:56:53] [SPEAKER_02]: which was freeway to confessions of a trick,

[00:56:55] [SPEAKER_02]: baby.

[00:56:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I,

[00:56:57] [SPEAKER_03]: there were certain titles.

[00:56:59] [SPEAKER_03]: I was like,

[00:57:00] [SPEAKER_03]: let me say this word out loud and like look in.

[00:57:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Cause it was usually like a creepy old man.

[00:57:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Renting it.

[00:57:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:57:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Because it looked like an underage person on the cover.

[00:57:13] [SPEAKER_02]: It was Natasha Lyonne.

[00:57:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.

[00:57:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.

[00:57:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Like very young looking.

[00:57:17] [SPEAKER_03]: And I'd just be like freeway to confessions of a trick,

[00:57:22] [SPEAKER_03]: baby.

[00:57:22] [SPEAKER_03]: And I would say it loud with my whole chest.

[00:57:24] [SPEAKER_03]: But like the people behind them in line knew what he was renting.

[00:57:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Why are you shaming people?

[00:57:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Well,

[00:57:34] [SPEAKER_03]: there is no reason for like a middle-aged man to be renting this movie.

[00:57:38] [SPEAKER_02]: What?

[00:57:39] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean,

[00:57:40] [SPEAKER_02]: it,

[00:57:41] [SPEAKER_02]: it,

[00:57:42] [SPEAKER_02]: like there's no nudity in it.

[00:57:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Well,

[00:57:44] [SPEAKER_02]: from like the first one.

[00:57:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:57:47] [SPEAKER_02]: It's just like a crazy weird movie.

[00:57:50] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.

[00:57:52] [SPEAKER_02]: There's dirtier movies.

[00:57:53] [SPEAKER_03]: I was thinking it was going to be something different.

[00:57:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe.

[00:57:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Probably.

[00:57:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Probably.

[00:57:57] [SPEAKER_03]: And I saw that.

[00:57:59] [SPEAKER_01]: That,

[00:57:59] [SPEAKER_02]: that one was also directed by Matthew Bright.

[00:58:02] [SPEAKER_02]: And the funny thing is like,

[00:58:04] [SPEAKER_02]: I forgot the last thing he did,

[00:58:05] [SPEAKER_02]: but it wasn't very,

[00:58:06] [SPEAKER_02]: like he hasn't done anything in a long time.

[00:58:08] [SPEAKER_02]: He just disappeared.

[00:58:10] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know where he's at.

[00:58:12] [SPEAKER_03]: What made cinematic excellence and then peaced out.

[00:58:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah,

[00:58:15] [SPEAKER_03]: pretty much.

[00:58:16] [SPEAKER_02]: What else do we got?

[00:58:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Two shots,

[00:58:18] [SPEAKER_03]: including Dan Hedaya and Brooke Steele's,

[00:58:21] [SPEAKER_03]: make it appear as if they are closest,

[00:58:23] [SPEAKER_03]: the same height,

[00:58:24] [SPEAKER_03]: but in fact,

[00:58:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Brooke Shields is six feet and a full three inches taller than Hedaya five,

[00:58:30] [SPEAKER_03]: who's five feet,

[00:58:31] [SPEAKER_03]: nine inches.

[00:58:32] [SPEAKER_03]: And she wears two inch pumps.

[00:58:34] [SPEAKER_03]: So she would have towered over him.

[00:58:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Like you can tell those scenes because they do like an overhead shot to make it.

[00:58:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Look like she's not the Amazon woman.

[00:58:45] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know why.

[00:58:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Like,

[00:58:46] [SPEAKER_03]: who cares?

[00:58:47] [SPEAKER_03]: So much is taller than him.

[00:58:48] [SPEAKER_02]: That's misogyny.

[00:58:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I think,

[00:58:51] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah,

[00:58:51] [SPEAKER_03]: we,

[00:58:51] [SPEAKER_03]: as time has progressed,
