[00:01:52] Hello.

[00:01:53] Welcome.

[00:01:54] Hello.

[00:01:54] Bienvenue.

[00:01:55] Hi.

[00:01:57] Oh yeah.

[00:01:58] Bonjour.

[00:02:00] If you want to get to know Vanessa a little bit better, make sure to tune in later this week

[00:02:05] as we discuss nostalgic foreign films and our own quirky likes and dislikes.

[00:02:11] But let's dive on into Amelie.

[00:02:15] So Amelie is a whimsical French film that follows the life of a shy, imaginative young woman named Amelie

[00:02:22] who lives in the heart of Paris.

[00:02:25] Growing up isolated, Amelie developed a vivid inner world, fighting joy in life's simple pleasures,

[00:02:31] cracking the surface of creme brulee, skipping stones, and daydreaming.

[00:02:36] One day she discovers a hidden box of childhood treasures in her apartment and decides to return

[00:02:42] it anonymously to its owner, setting off a chain reaction of good deeds around her neighborhood.

[00:02:48] Along the way, Amelie begins to intervene, often secretly, in the lives of those around her,

[00:02:53] bringing them unexpected happiness.

[00:02:55] But when she meets Nino, an eccentric young man with a quirky hobby of collecting discarded

[00:03:00] photo booth pictures, she must confront her own fears of intimacy and take a leap of faith

[00:03:06] towards love.

[00:03:07] It stars...

[00:03:09] I'm going to butcher these names.

[00:03:12] I apologize in advance.

[00:03:13] Audrey Tateau, Matthew Kasavitz, Rufus, Lorela Cravada, Sergey Merlin, Jamal Dubois,

[00:03:26] and Jean-Pierre.

[00:03:28] Thank you.

[00:03:29] Thank you.

[00:03:30] Thank you.

[00:03:31] Thank you.

[00:03:32] I'm really sorry, everyone.

[00:03:35] Claire Merer...

[00:03:36] Merer...

[00:03:37] This is worse than the grudge.

[00:03:43] Isabel Nanti and Dominique Pignon.

[00:03:46] It was directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, written by Guillaume Laurent and Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

[00:03:57] And you can currently watch it on HBO Max.

[00:04:00] But before we start, let's get into our ratings rewind.

[00:04:03] You know the drill?

[00:04:04] Before we get into the movie, we'll reveal the rating our Y2K versions of ourselves would

[00:04:08] give, and then at the end we'll see if our current selves agree with our initial rating.

[00:04:12] Our scale consists of...

[00:04:14] Would buy it, would buy it again.

[00:04:17] The best would play on repeat.

[00:04:20] Five-day rental.

[00:04:21] Would watch again.

[00:04:23] Two-day rental.

[00:04:24] Okay, but nothing to write home about.

[00:04:27] Same-day rental.

[00:04:29] Trash.

[00:04:30] Straight-up trash.

[00:04:31] Just like the streets of Paris.

[00:04:36] All right, Vanessa, we'll start with you.

[00:04:38] What was your Y2K rating of Amelie?

[00:04:43] Definitely would watch again.

[00:04:45] Just because it's such a girly, animated, creative movie that it's also kind of an Easter

[00:04:54] egg hunt too, where you have to notice the little things that's going on for you to like

[00:05:01] get the whole feel of Amelie and Perry.

[00:05:05] But yeah, I would definitely would buy it again.

[00:05:08] Yeah, for me it was a would buy.

[00:05:10] I owned it.

[00:05:12] I owned it multiple times.

[00:05:15] Naki?

[00:05:15] And I have never seen this movie.

[00:05:18] You haven't lived, child.

[00:05:20] You haven't lived.

[00:05:20] I don't know.

[00:05:22] Maybe...

[00:05:23] Because like, remember when we did Memento and we were talking to Jonathan and we were talking about

[00:05:29] like film bro moves, movies or whatever.

[00:05:33] I would have to say this kind of falls into that category in the sense that like, it's very like

[00:05:41] indie film house, you know.

[00:05:45] It's popular, but it's obscure at the same time.

[00:05:50] Oh, 500 Days of Summer definitely took notes of this movie.

[00:05:54] 100%.

[00:05:55] Of just how a manic pixie girl is beloved in films.

[00:06:01] I don't want to say she started the manic pixie girl, but she's definitely in the blueprint.

[00:06:08] All right, let's get into the box office.

[00:06:11] So this movie had a budget of $10 million and made $174 million worldwide.

[00:06:18] It became the highest grossing French language film in the U.S. at the time,

[00:06:23] with an approximate $33 million in domestic ticket sales.

[00:06:29] Lil Raj gave it 3.5 stars.

[00:06:33] I'm surprised it wasn't for Lil Raj.

[00:06:37] But this is what he had to say.

[00:06:38] Jean-Pierre Amelie is a delicious pastry of a movie.

[00:06:44] A lighthearted fantasy in which a winsome heroine overcomes a sad childhood and grows up to bring

[00:06:51] cheer to the needful and joy to herself.

[00:06:54] You see it and later when you think about it, you smile.

[00:06:58] It is so hard to make a nimble, charming comedy.

[00:07:01] So hard to get the tone right and find actors who embody charm instead of impersonating it.

[00:07:07] It takes so much confidence to dance on the tightrope of whimsy.

[00:07:12] Amelie takes those chances and gets away with them.

[00:07:15] Very true.

[00:07:17] That was a glowing review from Lil Raj.

[00:07:19] No lies told.

[00:07:22] Before we get into the cast and crew, let's hear a message from our pop house.

[00:07:32] Do you love all things rom-com, holiday, and Hallmark?

[00:07:35] If so, we have the podcast for you, The Hallmarkies Podcast.

[00:07:39] We aim to be your destination for previews and recaps of every romantic comedy and holiday film

[00:07:44] that's released in cinemas, on streaming, and on channels like Hallmark.

[00:07:49] We also cover all the Hallmark TV shows like When Calls the Heart and The Way Home.

[00:07:54] Still not enough?

[00:07:55] We have recapped every episode of Heartland, Sex and the City, All Creatures Great and Small, and more.

[00:08:01] We also have weekly ranking episodes and interviews with all your favorite stars.

[00:08:09] Did you know that we almost had Emily in Paris before we had Emily in Paris with the movie Amelie?

[00:08:19] Jean-Pierre wrote the role for Emily Watson, but ended up rewriting the screenplay after Watson became unavailable

[00:08:27] because she opted to make Gosford Park instead.

[00:08:30] I did not know that.

[00:08:33] That's pretty cool.

[00:08:35] That's really cool.

[00:08:36] I know that she was also not wanting to be away from home for six months.

[00:08:42] So, hey, I'm not mad at it.

[00:08:45] I think Audrey did amazing, and now I can't imagine anybody else in that role.

[00:08:50] Yeah, I know you said earlier that you own the DVD.

[00:08:55] I swear I own the DVD too because I used to listen to the commentary.

[00:09:00] And one of the also added reasons I think it was easier for her to let down this movie was because her French wasn't that great.

[00:09:09] And it would have been awful if it didn't go to a true French actress.

[00:09:15] Yes.

[00:09:15] Yes.

[00:09:16] They were thinking about actually letting her saying that she grew up in England to kind of get away with it, but it just it didn't.

[00:09:24] It wasn't flowing.

[00:09:27] Blessing in disguise.

[00:09:30] I think.

[00:09:30] And the funny thing is that he, the Jean-Pierre, he was walking the streets of Paris not long after Emily dropped out.

[00:09:39] And he was thinking about, oh my God, who's going to replace her?

[00:09:43] And then he saw a poster for Venus Beauty, which was featuring Audrey.

[00:09:49] And he said he was struck by her dark eyes and a flash of innocence and unusual demeanor.

[00:09:56] And he set up a meeting and she tried out for the part.

[00:10:00] And after 10 seconds, he knew she was the one.

[00:10:04] Kismet.

[00:10:05] Yes.

[00:10:06] I love that.

[00:10:07] So let's jump into Amelie.

[00:10:13] This is the shortest amount of notes I've ever taken on a movie just because I like actually had to watch it the whole time, especially because I hadn't seen it before.

[00:10:24] And a lot happens even when you glance down and you glance back up and you're like, how did we get here?

[00:10:31] So before we, I think we should talk about like the visuals of this movie before we dive in, because like.

[00:10:40] When I look at this movie, I don't, there's not a ton of movies that visually look like this.

[00:10:47] It's.

[00:10:48] And there's.

[00:10:50] Remember when we were doing the sixth sense, how sparingly he used the color red in that movie.

[00:10:56] The same could be said for this with blue.

[00:10:59] So you see, there's a blue lamp in the picture behind me, but it was very little blue.

[00:11:05] It was a lot of reds, greens, kind of oranges, yellows, more earth tones than anything.

[00:11:12] And it just stayed very consistent.

[00:11:15] And then they did such a good job making France look like this story book place that you, that she would imagine it to look like.

[00:11:25] Because I look at the way this movie is as how Amelie looks at the world.

[00:11:31] Like this is how she sees it.

[00:11:33] And very childlike because even describing likes and dislikes for people that she knows it's very childlike to think like that.

[00:11:44] Or, oh, I know that person because he likes to crack his knuckles or like my mom and dad, she loves to clean out her purse.

[00:11:52] It's something like a child would watch me do, like watch her father and mother do and like say like, this is what my dad does.

[00:12:00] This is what my mom does.

[00:12:01] Like she's very naive.

[00:12:04] I would even compare a direct parallel movie for this would be Harriet the Spy.

[00:12:12] Yeah.

[00:12:14] I know it's funny.

[00:12:15] But if you think about it, the way that there's this character, the central character that is looking, looking, observing her world and being nosy as fuck and intrusive into other people's lives.

[00:12:31] But like observing it very like they're twin movies, except one's a child.

[00:12:40] Just saying.

[00:12:42] Well, something for the adult.

[00:12:43] Mind of a child.

[00:12:44] Yeah.

[00:12:46] All right, Jack.

[00:12:48] Yeah.

[00:12:48] Sorry.

[00:12:48] You're good.

[00:12:49] So the film begins.

[00:12:51] There's some narration introducing Amelie's childhood.

[00:12:56] And so, and it goes into pretty graphic, not graphic, but like pretty good detail about how she was even conceived in 1974.

[00:13:09] It's very depressing.

[00:13:11] Like going back, it's something I never paid attention all the other times that I watched.

[00:13:15] But she has immense trauma.

[00:13:18] You know, from the fact that she literally watched her mom die.

[00:13:24] Yeah.

[00:13:25] And the way that it's set up in the movie because it's so like quirky and funny.

[00:13:31] You don't even take a second to realize how traumatic that is because a lady like falls from a building and falls on her mom.

[00:13:39] But even just after she asked for a brother.

[00:13:42] Yeah.

[00:13:42] Coming out of church.

[00:13:44] Like, yeah.

[00:13:45] So like, yeah, from a church on top of that.

[00:13:47] And like the fact that she talked about like all she ever wanted was her dad to hug her.

[00:13:53] And the only time he even engaged with her was her checkups.

[00:13:58] And I was like, wait a minute.

[00:13:59] Is the dad a doctor or is this just weird?

[00:14:02] No, I'm pretty sure he's a doctor.

[00:14:05] I hope so.

[00:14:07] If not, she's the context of this movie.

[00:14:11] But so you're seeing like a lot of loneliness and sadness and her parents are not compassionate.

[00:14:17] Like usually it's like one or the other.

[00:14:19] But her mom is very strict with her and her dad has nothing to do with her.

[00:14:26] You don't get warm fuzzies.

[00:14:29] No.

[00:14:30] Yet the movie, you do feel warm fuzzies.

[00:14:32] That's why it's such a weird thing when you really look at the details.

[00:14:36] Like every single person in this movie is quite depressing.

[00:14:41] Yeah.

[00:14:42] And she's just like, oh.

[00:14:45] But it also.

[00:14:45] Get those two people together.

[00:14:47] But it also talks.

[00:14:48] Like I think this movie shows the importance of community.

[00:14:51] You know, like we could be just having a lot of time.

[00:14:55] Having these difficulties by ourselves.

[00:14:59] But the moment that she starts interfering.

[00:15:02] What really it is.

[00:15:03] Is that she's connecting all these lonely people to each other.

[00:15:06] To have community with each other.

[00:15:08] Which is nice.

[00:15:09] Yeah, it's very sad that she wasn't surrounded by kids growing up.

[00:15:15] In a sense.

[00:15:16] Why she's so like quiet but curious too.

[00:15:20] Because all the things that she was doing as a kid.

[00:15:22] I was like, oh my god.

[00:15:23] I took the grass and like, you know, blew into it to make a sort of a noise.

[00:15:27] Or just like rolling a paper.

[00:15:31] And like spinning it.

[00:15:32] Like all the kids stuff.

[00:15:33] I was like, that's what kids do.

[00:15:35] And for her to do that by herself.

[00:15:37] And drinking milk by herself.

[00:15:39] It's really.

[00:15:40] Because it's so cinematically colorful.

[00:15:43] And you don't really notice how sad it actually is.

[00:15:51] Poor little Amelie.

[00:15:52] I know.

[00:15:53] So now we see Amelie.

[00:15:55] She is 23.

[00:15:56] She works as a waitress in a cafe.

[00:15:59] And she kind of just keeps to herself.

[00:16:01] She has her own little apartment.

[00:16:03] She sees her dad often.

[00:16:06] But it's still just a very like stoic relationship.

[00:16:10] Where there's not.

[00:16:12] Much happening.

[00:16:13] It's more just her checking in on him.

[00:16:16] More than it is anything.

[00:16:18] And he has this obsession with gnomes all of a sudden.

[00:16:23] Well, when your wife dies.

[00:16:25] And you retire.

[00:16:27] You got to fill your time somehow.

[00:16:29] It's very weird.

[00:16:31] But I love that.

[00:16:33] Like down the line.

[00:16:35] When she's like interfering in everyone's life.

[00:16:37] She did like a flat Stanley situation.

[00:16:39] Where she comes to her dad's house.

[00:16:43] Steals one of his gnomes.

[00:16:44] And then starts sending him postcards.

[00:16:47] From different places all around the world.

[00:16:49] Sent to him by the gnome.

[00:16:51] And this man does not.

[00:16:54] Question it for a second.

[00:16:55] Question it at all.

[00:16:56] He doesn't say who's doing this to me.

[00:16:59] He's awaiting the next Polaroid.

[00:17:01] He's like my gnome is having a great time.

[00:17:05] Time of his life.

[00:17:06] But does not question who the fuck is punking me like this.

[00:17:11] Which is funny for a couple of different reasons.

[00:17:15] One.

[00:17:16] Now like Travelocity.

[00:17:19] The mascot is.

[00:17:21] The traveling gnome.

[00:17:23] And like even on the Amazing Race.

[00:17:25] Because they're sponsored by Travelocity.

[00:17:26] Like they get gnomes they have to carry.

[00:17:29] And like do things with.

[00:17:31] And then.

[00:17:32] I got.

[00:17:34] It was back in like 2014.

[00:17:35] The second time I went to Europe.

[00:17:39] Somehow I had gotten this tiny gnome.

[00:17:42] He was like two inches tall.

[00:17:44] And we took pictures of him in every like location we went to.

[00:17:49] So I have a whole.

[00:17:50] His name is Hans the traveling gnome.

[00:17:52] And he has his own Facebook page from 2014.

[00:17:55] And just every new city.

[00:17:57] Or new place we visited.

[00:17:59] We take a picture of Hans and post it on the Facebook page.

[00:18:02] Oh boy.

[00:18:04] Well.

[00:18:06] Travelocity stole the idea of the gnome.

[00:18:09] I guess so.

[00:18:10] From Amelie.

[00:18:11] Yeah.

[00:18:11] They owed them some residual money.

[00:18:16] So on the night that Princess Diana and Dottie Alfaed.

[00:18:22] Is that how you say his name?

[00:18:23] The night that they pass away.

[00:18:25] Amelie is distraught.

[00:18:26] And she drops the lid to something.

[00:18:28] And it like hits the baseboard in a way.

[00:18:31] Where like this little compartment.

[00:18:33] Kind of is revealed.

[00:18:36] Yeah.

[00:18:36] Pops a tile out.

[00:18:37] And then she notices there's like a fucking hole.

[00:18:41] And she doesn't feel.

[00:18:42] She doesn't seem anxiety ridden about that.

[00:18:45] Because I would be terrified of like rats and stuff getting in my house.

[00:18:50] She's just like what's in this little crevice?

[00:18:53] And she pulls out a tin box.

[00:18:55] And it's just hidden with child treasures.

[00:18:57] Like there's like a photo of a man.

[00:19:00] And like little horse.

[00:19:03] Like tin horse.

[00:19:04] And some other items in there.

[00:19:07] Like a bicycle.

[00:19:08] And so she's like I wonder about this tin.

[00:19:11] She also at this point mentions that.

[00:19:15] There is someone across the.

[00:19:18] Like in the next apartments over from her.

[00:19:21] Who has brittle bone syndrome.

[00:19:23] And so he's really never left his apartment.

[00:19:27] He just sits in pains.

[00:19:28] But he's been there forever.

[00:19:31] And so she's now on a quest.

[00:19:33] To return this box.

[00:19:35] To its owner.

[00:19:37] But she has to figure out who lived in her.

[00:19:40] Apartment before she did.

[00:19:43] Yeah.

[00:19:44] She.

[00:19:46] The characters that we meet.

[00:19:48] I'm trying to.

[00:19:49] Let me just.

[00:19:50] Find out who.

[00:19:51] What their names are.

[00:19:52] Because.

[00:19:54] I was all over the place.

[00:19:56] Oh gosh.

[00:19:58] I know there's Georgette.

[00:20:00] What's the man who.

[00:20:01] At the store.

[00:20:02] Or the little.

[00:20:04] Fruit shop.

[00:20:06] Place.

[00:20:07] I don't know.

[00:20:07] The kid or the man.

[00:20:08] The man.

[00:20:09] Let me see.

[00:20:10] Okay.

[00:20:10] So we meet.

[00:20:12] The lady downstairs.

[00:20:15] Named Madeline.

[00:20:17] Oh.

[00:20:18] Collegion.

[00:20:19] Sorry.

[00:20:21] And she's always.

[00:20:23] You know.

[00:20:24] Complaining that her husband left her.

[00:20:26] Years ago.

[00:20:26] She's stuck.

[00:20:27] In this place.

[00:20:29] Then we got Brittle Bones Man.

[00:20:32] I don't know what his name is.

[00:20:34] And.

[00:20:34] Then we have.

[00:20:36] The shop owner downstairs.

[00:20:37] Who sells the fruit and vegetables.

[00:20:39] His helper.

[00:20:40] Helper.

[00:20:41] Lucian.

[00:20:42] So.

[00:20:43] These are.

[00:20:44] Her.

[00:20:44] Neighbors.

[00:20:45] That she's.

[00:20:46] Interacting with.

[00:20:47] And then.

[00:20:48] At.

[00:20:49] The shop.

[00:20:49] That she works at.

[00:20:50] We have Georgette.

[00:20:51] We have Joseph.

[00:20:52] The stalker.

[00:20:54] Of one of her coworkers.

[00:20:56] And.

[00:20:59] I don't know.

[00:21:00] Who the other girl is.

[00:21:01] Is it Gina?

[00:21:03] Is that the other lady's name?

[00:21:05] The blonde that.

[00:21:06] Joseph is obsessed with.

[00:21:09] Yeah.

[00:21:10] And then.

[00:21:11] Her name was Gina.

[00:21:12] And I think they have.

[00:21:13] Then there's also a store owner.

[00:21:14] So.

[00:21:15] All of these people are in her.

[00:21:17] Her circle.

[00:21:18] Her life.

[00:21:19] And we learned pretty early on.

[00:21:21] That.

[00:21:23] Amelie is.

[00:21:24] Very much about justice.

[00:21:26] And she a petty.

[00:21:28] Revengeful woman.

[00:21:29] That was one of my.

[00:21:31] Well also likes to stir the pot.

[00:21:33] Yes.

[00:21:35] Yes she does.

[00:21:37] Because why would you hook up.

[00:21:38] The crazy stalker.

[00:21:39] With the.

[00:21:40] The hypochondriac.

[00:21:41] Like.

[00:21:42] You know it's going to be.

[00:21:43] Messy fallout.

[00:21:44] When it comes.

[00:21:46] But she's here for it.

[00:21:47] She's here.

[00:21:48] She lives for the drama.

[00:21:48] She doesn't want to be the drama.

[00:21:50] But she lives for the drama.

[00:21:53] So much.

[00:21:55] Oh that guy was such an incel though.

[00:21:57] I was just like.

[00:21:58] Wow.

[00:21:59] We finally have a term.

[00:22:00] And definition.

[00:22:01] For what type of guy this is.

[00:22:05] Definitely.

[00:22:06] The store owner guy.

[00:22:07] Or the.

[00:22:09] Recording guy.

[00:22:10] The recording guy.

[00:22:12] That literally.

[00:22:13] Has no job.

[00:22:14] And is there.

[00:22:15] Every day.

[00:22:16] Harassing.

[00:22:18] The waitresses.

[00:22:19] That he used to date.

[00:22:21] It's creepy.

[00:22:22] I don't know why they don't kick him out.

[00:22:24] Like.

[00:22:24] Yeah.

[00:22:25] He's got to go.

[00:22:28] 100%.

[00:22:28] They only had like.

[00:22:29] A total of three people in that store.

[00:22:31] At any given time.

[00:22:32] So maybe they needed the money more than they needed.

[00:22:35] Their waitresses.

[00:22:37] I don't know if he was buying anything but tea.

[00:22:39] Or coffee.

[00:22:40] He is.

[00:22:42] Crazy.

[00:22:42] Crazy.

[00:22:43] I didn't even see him put money down when he was buying those scratch offs.

[00:22:47] I was like.

[00:22:48] I didn't.

[00:23:13] I didn't.

[00:23:14] He.

[00:23:15] Kind of.

[00:23:16] She.

[00:23:18] Calls a payphone that had.

[00:23:20] That she's put the box in.

[00:23:22] And so he goes to.

[00:23:24] To answer the payphone.

[00:23:26] And.

[00:23:27] So she's orchestrated.

[00:23:28] Kind of this.

[00:23:29] Anti meet cute.

[00:23:30] Where he just picks up the box.

[00:23:32] And is like.

[00:23:33] So.

[00:23:35] Elated.

[00:23:35] That somehow this box has come back to him.

[00:23:38] And he's so happy.

[00:23:39] and then she goes into the bar that he goes into to celebrate with a cognac and so he starts kind

[00:23:47] of telling her about like things have been returned to me and it's a miracle and all this stuff so

[00:23:52] she this sets her on her vision quest to complete good deeds for people

[00:24:00] she's a warrior for sure because she's stay watching that man and everybody else

[00:24:05] but i like the journey where she's like trying to find him and it's like in her mind there's a vision

[00:24:12] of who she thinks this person is because that what first guy she meets she's like horrified like this

[00:24:17] is not it and she's so visually appalled by it that it's pretty funny because i was trying to figure

[00:24:23] out why she was so upset but knowing the age range of the person who had to live there he wasn't a fit

[00:24:30] anyway so i don't know why she freaked out but then one of the other people was a woman and she was

[00:24:36] like you down to clown normally it was like no thanks jackie i love how you say that he went to

[00:24:47] the bar to go celebrate because to me that was like is this real life i would probably do the

[00:24:53] same thing and order a shot of tequila and be like you have no idea what happened to me like i don't know

[00:24:59] if this is real he's just like i need a drink this thing that i hid in a wall 40 years ago was just

[00:25:09] returned to me by pure luck right i was just answering the phone i would think that's too weird i would

[00:25:18] have to i'm like somebody set me up you'd be looking around well he took it as a sign to see his

[00:25:26] daughter that he hasn't seen in years yeah he was is he the one who was eating the chicken with his

[00:25:33] hands yes yeah that was his like that he ate chicken with his hands no thanks

[00:25:46] so amelie sets out to to do other secret good deeds she's like a vigilante now

[00:25:52] and so with the zorro costume yes she fancies herself zorro

[00:26:00] she she helps the the neighbor across the way with brittle bones

[00:26:09] what let's pause for a second brittle bones um why you got cameras looking at everything

[00:26:20] and he's like he stays recording all the time and he's also trying to paint this one person's face

[00:26:28] for the longest it kind of reminded me of head over heels where she was trying to redo that man's face

[00:26:35] so he's got a weird setup going on over there he paints it once a year it's renwa's luncheon of the

[00:26:43] boating party and he's perfected everything except for that one person the girl drinking

[00:26:49] the water her face and he tries every year it's it's a very interesting i just thought

[00:26:59] maybe he couldn't see because for the most part the camera's fixed on the clock across the street

[00:27:07] so i just thought maybe he didn't have a clock and so that was his own setup but why would you have

[00:27:12] a video camera not a clock it didn't make sense to me but i went with it it's super weird because

[00:27:18] then i'm like is he looking at her all the time or is she looking at him or is this a mute they're both

[00:27:26] mutually stalking each other but he yells at lucian

[00:27:31] well because maybe because lucian's attempts are not as um clean

[00:27:40] sure

[00:27:43] so we do see her help the lady downstairs she has all of these love letters from her husband who had

[00:27:53] subsequently left her moved to another country and then was in a plane crash

[00:27:59] and so she omelie steals all of her letters finds bits and pieces i hopes makes copy of the originals and

[00:28:09] then cuts them up because she's cutting up letters i hope they're not the originals and then like kind of

[00:28:16] frankenstein's this one last letter she like soaks it in tea to make it look rugged and stuff and

[00:28:25] essentially she sends it and like it has a note that says we found a mail bag within the wreckage

[00:28:35] and this letter was in it and here you go and it's like the husband confessing that he was devastated that

[00:28:46] he left her and he was coming back to her he wanted her to move there and all of these really wonderful

[00:28:53] things and so then that encourages that neighbor to move on like she can move past that he left her

[00:29:00] and now he's dead and things were unresolved she also has a stuffed dog that she points towards

[00:29:08] the photo of the husband

[00:29:11] like that lady that's always looking at the photo yes yes that lady though each character reminds it

[00:29:22] like i feel like that's the point that it reminds you of someone you've met before

[00:29:26] yeah because we've all met someone who's stuck in the past and tells you the same stories over and over

[00:29:32] again definitely and like you said there was georgette who works at the cafe the cafe is weird because it's

[00:29:41] like mostly cafe but then there's this little booth that sells cigarettes and lottery tickets

[00:29:48] but it's all in the same place yeah i'm guessing that might be normal in france it might be

[00:29:54] yeah i've never encountered it but it might be

[00:29:59] and so yeah she hooks up joseph with georgette and the the culmination is like he

[00:30:09] he asks for a scratch-off ticket they stand there and do god knows how many scratch-off tickets together

[00:30:15] doesn't look like anyone's paid for any of these scratch-off tickets and then he goes to the bathroom

[00:30:23] and then amelie purposely spills a very hot coffee on georgette so then she has to go to the bathroom

[00:30:32] too and in a lot of places in europe there's individual like toilets and then you come out

[00:30:38] and it's a communal sink so i guess that's the place that they were both in together and then they just

[00:30:45] start going at they're about to like knock shit off of walls well it was an earthquake

[00:30:52] it was very much jurassic park with the water movement just like

[00:30:59] our girl needed it even though that man is crazy she needed her back blown that was her

[00:31:06] like her doctor when she was coming in with all that those complaints that should have been his

[00:31:11] prescription i need your back your back to be blown out and all that relief and she was good for a few

[00:31:19] days she was she was good for a few days and honestly those two people it's not like they secretly were

[00:31:26] liking each other but they were just so happy someone wanted to like be with them yeah and it would

[00:31:34] have been nice to see him go crazy about her talking about her many diseases but he was like

[00:31:41] so overwhelming could you imagine could you imagine like every person that goes by you

[00:31:49] not even liking you that man was able to pull receipts from the multiple times that the man in

[00:31:55] the camel jacket were there

[00:31:58] i work in a cafe sir and i sell cigarettes and scratch-offs i'm going to have regular customers

[00:32:09] yeah give me a break

[00:32:14] so tragic

[00:32:16] so we also see amelie amelie's revenge because there's a very sweet

[00:32:24] guy that works at the produce stand and he just loves his vegetables he takes really good care of

[00:32:33] them and he wants to pick the perfect produce for his customers and the shop owner is so incredibly

[00:32:40] mean to him and racist yes 100 percent and so amelie's like not on my watch and she makes a copy

[00:32:53] of his key well so that's the thing she sees that he leaves his key in his door so she tries to be a nice

[00:33:02] neighbor and give return it to him and when she's trying to talk to him he is just ignoring her and so

[00:33:09] then she hears how she talked how he talks to lucian and he's she's like you know what

[00:33:15] bet we gonna take care of this real quick but he was just being so condescending to her too like oh

[00:33:21] do you want your artichoke now and she's just like no like the way she just looked at him and i was

[00:33:27] like yeah go for it now

[00:33:32] he deserves it so while he's at work she breaks into his house

[00:33:38] and she replaces his light bulbs with buzzy light bulbs

[00:33:42] she puts a pin in the electrical wire of his lamp and like even cuts it so you can't see it

[00:33:51] until you plug the lamp in and there's like sparks and explosion replaces his slippers with the small

[00:33:58] a smaller size she reverses the handle of his bathroom door like vigilante shit and he had he's like

[00:34:11] so it changes his his speed dial yes all his speed dial preferences all messed up i think she

[00:34:20] goes in there twice right like the first time she's pretty she does little tiny things like move the door

[00:34:25] handle whatever but then the second time is when she gets to business for real also like just a side

[00:34:33] when lucid drops off the food because he does food deliveries for people when he drops off the stuff

[00:34:41] for the old man brittle bones why does he hide what he's actually giving to him like he has champagne

[00:34:50] but he hides it under like a like fruit juice did you guys know this is it yeah i took it as like he stole it

[00:35:00] and did you get the home alone vibes though from amelie when she was doing all of that to

[00:35:09] the shop owner's home because i was like this is such a child's mind yes knowing how to like spark a light bulb

[00:35:18] from a lamp and the salt in the liquor like it was just very much like home alone to me yes

[00:35:27] and it was nothing that was ever going to like really hurt him it's just minor inconveniences

[00:35:37] which i loved so much set his alarm clock for 4 a.m it's what you get

[00:35:47] he deserved every second of it that would like doing something like that slowly would drive me

[00:35:54] crazy yeah so we also are introduced to nino it seems like does she know nino from school

[00:36:06] no no the narrator tells us the story about him and so like she just meets him randomly

[00:36:14] because she takes a train every weekend to go visit her dad and she notices him with like some sort of

[00:36:22] ruler polar thing he's going under the photo booth yeah and so when she sees him it's like

[00:36:32] pretty an epic thing for her because they're both staring at each other and then she gets shy and like

[00:36:39] runs away but yeah nothing really happens when they first meet per se but when we meet when she meets

[00:36:49] him the narrator tells us about his life how he started so we know amelie is the only child is not

[00:36:57] doesn't have many friends and so they talk about nino having too many but it's really because he's being

[00:37:05] bullied his whole childhood essentially so then again parallel both of them are very traumatized from

[00:37:14] childhood yeah and then they are both kind of quirky have odd jobs different situations going on and

[00:37:23] very weird hobbies like we learned that one of his hobbies is cut getting all the shredded

[00:37:32] pictures from the photo booth and he has like a little photo album if a man that i thought was cute

[00:37:39] dropped his bag of stuff and i opened it and it was a photo album of cut up pictures from the photo booth

[00:37:51] i will call that one one it is serial killer vibes it is well and before that it was footprints and cement

[00:38:04] yes she learns so the whole deal is that she meets him that one time just randomly the second time she meets him

[00:38:17] um he is chasing this man who dropped a bag so he's trying to get the man his stuff and so she chases him

[00:38:26] chasing the man and i think this scene in particular is what makes her fall in love with him that he would

[00:38:34] be so willing to go above and beyond to go help this person which is a characteristic something she probably

[00:38:40] would do herself or maybe she would just find the person because she seems to be scared but she follows him

[00:38:48] he takes off on his bike and he drops his bag this is where we're introduced to the bag she opens the bag and now

[00:38:57] it's like she's making up a storyline i love that aspect too that she throughout the movie she is making

[00:39:05] up storylines in her head as to what the scenarios and he does too yeah they are soulmates

[00:39:17] so now she's trying to track him down and figure out how to get his book back to him

[00:39:25] and so she ends up at the sex store that he works at yep and i i'm still trying to understand what exactly

[00:39:36] he does is he the announcer the dj what's going on or is he just at the front of the store i think

[00:39:42] he's just a clerk okay well yes he works at the sex store he's not the one mopping jizz

[00:39:52] that was it that i didn't think okay well because there was a lady dancing in a in a room so yes

[00:40:02] very very true so his co-worker that got him the job tells her amelie that he has a second job and

[00:40:11] it's at like this little fest not festival like little amusement park and so amelie goes over

[00:40:20] there and it's very much it reminded me very much of coney island like it just like run down little

[00:40:31] roller coasters and uh like it was like the ride she gets on is a haunted house ride or whatever

[00:40:39] but there are live people within the ride that can touch you i've seen that in different ghost houses

[00:40:49] or whatever at one of those kind of parks before where people kind of like pop out and stuff like that

[00:40:55] but what those two were doing amelie is a freak y'all she is she loved it the way he was like

[00:41:08] and she was just like she was like she was about to he's about to come i was shocked i was like

[00:41:18] oh my god girl we're in public children around she was around i'm not gonna lie i laughed so hard

[00:41:26] because i was like i get it girl when you got it bad

[00:41:33] i got it that's slow weird ooh as he like traces his finger across his face like i was like oh

[00:41:44] oh okay that was a little bit much with the touching i will i was like danielle would not

[00:41:54] stan for people touching her face in the dark you would have gotten beat for sure that's one of my

[00:42:02] biggest pet peeves is i don't like fingers it's like my child loves to touch my face and i'm like i

[00:42:07] don't like fingers on my face um this this scene was hilarious i rewound it a few times cracking up

[00:42:18] because i'm like you got it bad amelie and he was i guess he matched her freak for real the two of them

[00:42:26] she was she definitely got him back though on the little scavenger hunt after that yes i feel like

[00:42:36] that was a good like getting even with each other with him doing ooh like that and she was just like

[00:42:43] waving her hand when she finds out i don't like all the things that she does

[00:42:49] before he act like he is dedicating dedicated to meeting her even though she anybody else would

[00:42:59] have been like this bitch crazy especially when he like yes runs her in the diner she admits to it

[00:43:08] and then like pieces out and he's like he's still like when i'll find you okay first of all the first

[00:43:19] time you you reach out to me you have me meet somewhere to answer a phone call then you send me

[00:43:28] on some expedition with arrows send me all the way up he was huffing and puffing yeah so that you can

[00:43:38] wave that and putting his scrapbook i would say his scrapbook of all of the pictures is equivalent to

[00:43:47] my roswell scrapbook and my highly insane but very we were a lot of work dedicated work ethic

[00:43:58] but if the police found it we would be arrested

[00:44:03] might be so there's that scene then she called she invites him again this time i think oh she

[00:44:13] takes a picture herself in a zorro costume so he could find it and then she puts like one to meet

[00:44:18] him and he matches her freak because he takes one of the photos of her belly button and is like do you

[00:44:26] know this person why would you use that photo sir because he wanted to only talk to her

[00:44:34] he knew she would be the only one who would know what the fuck this was

[00:44:38] and she has all of those flyers that she's taken down like hung up in her apartment all over the place

[00:44:45] look if a man match my freak

[00:44:50] i would definitely have the evidence hanging around

[00:44:56] i would frame it for sure did you get the vibe though because he was talking to his friend who

[00:45:05] is also his co-worker where the whole entire vibe of everybody in this movie is that love is kind of

[00:45:14] dumb or it's a facade or it doesn't exist and like amelie is very naive to like even think that love is

[00:45:23] real but like because of her neighbor pushing her she like goes for it because so many people around

[00:45:29] her shows her that like love is not true i don't know i like even nino is like what when he finally

[00:45:38] was so into her because she's so mysterious she was just like what you're gonna be in love with her

[00:45:45] like how's like you think that kind of thing actually happens that's the attitude i got from everyone

[00:45:52] in the movie besides amelie well and even amelie towards the beginning of the movie she talks about

[00:45:59] how she's had sex before but like she didn't get the appeals she was like okay she needs to be

[00:46:07] stimulated up here first with some games oh in an alternate reality her and jigsaw from

[00:46:18] saw her perfect hair perfectly yeah well one of her favorite hobbies is listening to people's

[00:46:25] orgasms that was like in the top of the film amelie is a freak you know

[00:46:32] she freaky cheeky she a very freaky girl yeah but a non-judgmental freaky girl yes when those two

[00:46:43] were getting it on the bathroom she was watching y'all she was watching but she also turned the

[00:46:49] steamer on to distract from the noise yeah she's a good friend but nino when he was in the restaurant

[00:46:57] waiting for her he saw this woman walk in and she was you know like fully stacked and he got if you

[00:47:05] notice he got really excited yeah but with amelie he when he walked into a restaurant he walked right

[00:47:12] by her she didn't register to him yeah at all at first i thought that was very interesting

[00:47:19] well just like not his type maybe i just thought maybe it was he thought he was looking for another

[00:47:26] patron and wasn't really thinking it might have been someone that worked there i also think it shows

[00:47:33] how amelie comes off that she kind of can blend blend in to the surroundings because she's introverted

[00:47:42] and she's not really trying to be seen but i kind of would have thought that would have been nice if he

[00:47:48] out of all people would have seen her like noticed her but very not bright that one because then she's

[00:47:57] behind him clearly like breathing behind him and then it just got weird after that yeah because he

[00:48:06] calls her out he's like is this you and he has a zorro picture and she's like no but this is you and

[00:48:14] she's like okay and then she gets nervous and scuttles off jot something down and then like has her

[00:48:24] co-workers slip it in his pocket she was expecting some sort of like love like lust like magical romantic

[00:48:35] thing to happen and she got the reality of just like so i have to talk to you

[00:48:45] if amelie's character is not a pisces or a cancer i don't know what to say because those are the two

[00:48:54] signs that be living in delu loo for sure that's the two of us yeah because i'm like would i do what

[00:49:04] she was doing probably if someone matched your freak yeah yeah so he finally does she write her address

[00:49:16] on the note what was on the note that so she sends him a note telling him to meet her at the photo booth

[00:49:24] at five because there was a mystery that was plaguing him that there was this man that kept taking his

[00:49:31] photos and ripping them up and so she accidentally figures out who this man is turns out he's a service

[00:49:39] provider so he takes care of the photo booth and that so she's setting it up because she calls the

[00:49:46] photo booth says that it's jammed to send the guy and he's looking for her he turns around and he looks

[00:49:53] and sees who comes out and it's the man and he realizes because he's got his tools he's like oh my god

[00:50:00] so you could tell just on his facial expressions no words are exchanged really that this whole mystery

[00:50:07] has been solved for him he can he can sleep at night now right and so she tries to go engage with him

[00:50:15] and talk to him and then randomly there's like a cart of all this like garbage that cuts in front of

[00:50:24] them and she loses her she loses she loses her i can't think of it thank you she loses her nerve

[00:50:32] and so then she leaves and he goes to the cafe because he's kind of like i'm sick of this shit

[00:50:41] let let's do this like hello so he goes to the cafe and her neighbor like we were saying brittle bones

[00:50:49] he was like you know you've got to try yeah you've got to try to go live my question though between these

[00:51:00] two brittle bones and amelie what are these videos she sends him i don't know

[00:51:06] i didn't understand it either because although the bike racers with the horse was beautiful what was

[00:51:13] the message at the end about like the man tapping born yeah being born on friday the 13th

[00:51:24] like it was random i i i was like all right they're saying they were sending memes before memes

[00:51:34] that's the only thing i could think of because it's not it's not adding up yeah just side note the dad

[00:51:44] while all this is going on he finally says fuck it i'm gonna go travel like my gnome because the gnome

[00:51:51] is returned turns out that amelie gave the gnome to one of the girls who comes into the cafe who's a

[00:51:57] stortis a flight attendant who goes and travels so she was the one taking the pictures and so the dad's

[00:52:04] like fuck it i'm going on vacay so dad is out trying to think the lady downstairs she gets the letter from

[00:52:10] amelie so she's happy and content brittle bones gets to keep on peeping lucian gets to hang out and

[00:52:19] peep as well the guy at the storefront he's still an ass but amelie does pull out like that scene where

[00:52:27] she's in line and she's talking about this asshole and she's like i need a really good liner and then

[00:52:33] that man appeared in the sewer i don't know what that was i don't know it was troll yeah i don't know

[00:52:41] if that was a real person telling her a line or that was her brain but anywho she had a really good

[00:52:47] comeback for him about not even having a heart like an artichoke or something so he's like damn

[00:52:56] um the two people at the crazy couple they're still coupling i guess but i don't know if it's gonna get

[00:53:05] any better and then her co-worker runs into matthew to nino and says i want to suss you out

[00:53:12] because my girl amelie she don't know nothing about men and my friend can we ask better questions

[00:53:21] to suss this man out than giving him a bunch of parables and seeing if he will finish them like

[00:53:29] maybe i don't know have you murdered someone have you been arrested who do you live with are you

[00:53:35] married like i'm just top of head thinking of things i don't know yeah so he french do it differently

[00:53:45] i guess so nico shows up at her door because he passes the weird parables test and

[00:53:56] amelie finally opens it like she's very unsure at first and she's like nervous but he has her

[00:54:03] blocked into her apartment essentially well he when he knocks at first he says he's gonna come back

[00:54:09] and so she doesn't answer it at first and that's when her neighbor is like you gotta take a chance

[00:54:14] yeah so she thinks she's running out to go get him but he happens to just be back at the door so

[00:54:19] now it's like and then she doesn't when he tries to speak that was kind of hot where she just puts her

[00:54:25] fingers on his lips and says shh and then she just slowly starts to kiss him all over his face

[00:54:32] without fully making out but just like tenderly kissing him and i was like i like where this is

[00:54:36] going i like this a lot it just feels so intimidating yeah it felt way more intimate than if they just were

[00:54:47] like you know the heavy breathing i can't stand that but it just is it felt very passionate

[00:54:55] with yes and very tender and and playful and almost childlike yes yeah it was it was a very lovely scene

[00:55:07] and they go and do it they they know fucking words no words they don't know shit about each other

[00:55:17] but there was a scene where she is like cooking or something and she is imagining him coming home in

[00:55:26] their life together and i'm like girl you got it real ben she does it's such like middle school high

[00:55:35] school imagination when you think of your crush yeah that's a love it yeah and then the last scene is her

[00:55:46] now riding on the back of his little motorized bicycle the the whole movie has been like very

[00:55:53] flowy and whimsical and like meandering and this very last scene is like fast and chaotic almost like

[00:56:02] she she's catching up with her age like experiencing all of these things at once because now she's in

[00:56:09] love with nino yeah um but she's having the time of her life doing it

[00:56:19] and that's amelie that is amelie

[00:56:24] oh let's see if there are any fun facts that we missed just a few so when when the film was shot on

[00:56:35] location the director and the crew would clean the area of debris grime trash and graffiti so that the

[00:56:42] real settings would match the fantastic nature of the film and this was an especially difficult task

[00:56:48] when it came to shoot at the train station

[00:56:54] vanessie want to grab one after the movie the chairs from the outside of the cafe did do

[00:57:00] moulin were changed to avoid them being stolen oh that makes sense about it being clean because that

[00:57:09] was what i noticed while watching the movie i was like wow the subway looked like it was scrubbed

[00:57:15] or that windshield wipe or that yeah power wash it you can tell like they really did

[00:57:21] clean the subway because it was immaculate yeah because paris is not known for being very clean

[00:57:29] like the cafe day to do moulins or moulin where amelie works is a real place it's in paris but the

[00:57:41] studio scenes were actually filmed in cologne germany they the director talked about this that he was

[00:57:48] trying to make a decision if he wanted to do everything in a studio but then they opted to do the

[00:57:55] scenes in france at locations but they had to do all that cleaning every day and then the interior shots

[00:58:05] they did do in a studio and then that cafe is found at 15 rue lepic in mont marty i'm sure i'm saying

[00:58:20] that wrong and it still looks like it does in the movie except that now crumberly is named after

[00:58:26] amelie and tourists are always taking pictures of the place and a lot of the yelp reviews mention the film

[00:58:33] as well i mean you you're never going out of business for that it's true one movie set for life

[00:58:42] oh so audrey doesn't know how to skip stones so they didn't really use any cgi in this movie except

[00:58:49] for this one part which was so that she just was pretending to skip the stones and then they did it

[00:58:56] afterwards to make it seem like she could and it was in 1974 that jean pierre began collecting the

[00:59:08] memories and events that make up the story amelie so that's why that is her birth year so he's been

[00:59:14] thinking about this movie for a while i think there's like a film of the afterwards of amelie right or

[00:59:22] like the making of amelie it was like a lot of artifacts on amelie i think so i don't remember

[00:59:33] the extras i should have tried to watch it on tvd i do know that there's like a lot of different

[00:59:42] things dedicated just to the look of the film the set design the costume design because it is

[00:59:51] a visually appealing movie if it wasn't as visually appealing i even wonder if it would have been as

[01:00:01] beloved you know i think it's like a combination i'm trying to think assuming in this case that

[01:00:09] correlation equals causation in 2000 the year before the movie came out there were 12 babies in england

[01:00:15] and wales that were given the name amelie the number shot up to 250 in 2002 and by 2007

[01:00:23] there were about 1100 new amelies per year the number has held steady ever since the trend was

[01:00:31] similar in the u.s with amelie not among the thousand most popular names until 2003 when it suddenly left

[01:00:39] to 839 place and has risen from there interesting

[01:00:47] that's why we have all these bellas thanks twilight

[01:00:53] i always think of emma when friends came out with the baby name like there's a lot of emmas

[01:01:00] very true and the film was shot using wide angle lenses which often distorted facial features

[01:01:08] so the camera was rarely at eye level and was usually slightly above or below eye level

[01:01:15] and like we said the main colors of the film were green yellow and red and were inspired by the

[01:01:21] paintings of brazilian artists while i hope i don't say this warres kato i don't know my spanish

[01:01:29] teacher or would be mad well it's brazilian so portuguese i didn't take it so that's an excuse

[01:01:35] thank you vanessa said i did fine y'all

[01:02:12] that was about 15 ish years ago and yeah this movie like the ending just the romantic part really got me

[01:02:25] going and i just started crying like there's just a lot of moments where you're just like

[01:02:29] you take for granted like childish things that are going on around you in the world and like this movie

[01:02:36] made me want to like stop and look at go outside and touch grass as the young kids would say

[01:02:44] goodbye again yeah and for me it would buy it again i haven't watched it maybe in two years

[01:02:52] but normally it's like what i watch when it's fall it's a very cozy comfort for me i love this movie

[01:03:02] and for me it was a little too whimsical for me um there were elements that i really loved love the

[01:03:14] cinematography and the look and the feel the story was just a little too chaotic so i'm gonna go today

[01:03:22] i'm really sorry it's okay i i get why people really love this movie it's just not my particular

[01:03:31] cup of tea it's nostalgic i mean it made me want to be young again because i saw this movie at such a

[01:03:40] young age that i just remember how i fantasize romantically about this film as a teen and now

[01:03:48] as an adult i was like oh i remember just like believing the belief the hope yeah now i just want

[01:03:58] to dissect everybody's mental illnesses in this movie there was a lot of them yeah well if you have

[01:05:48] that's roman holiday which my grandpa it's one of our favorite stories to tell um we were watching

[01:05:57] it at his house because ken and i watched every audrey audrey heppard movie in order and so we were
